Matt Johnson, a senior at Oakton High School, has been named Virginia Journalist of the Year by the Journalism Education Association. He was judged on skilled and creative use of media, use of an inquiring mind and investigative persistence, courageous and responsible handling of sensitive issues and participating in a variety of journalistic experiences. Johnson, who participated in the CSPAN-Cox presidential debates this past fall and serves as senior class president, will represent Virginia in the national competition in April.
K. Arienne Johnson, daughter of Mike and Barb Johnson of Herndon, was named to the Dean’s List at Goshen College for the 2008-09 fall semester. Johnson is a junior studying History and Bible and Religion. The Dean's List includes students earning at least a 3.75 GPA, while completing at least 12 hours of course work for a letter grade.
Genevieve N. Navin of Herndon was named to the Dean’s Scholars List at Millsaps College in Jackson, Miss. for the Fall 2008 semester. A student must have a GPA of at least 3.5 for the semester to qualify for the Dean’s Scholars List.
Eileen D. Foley of Herndon, graduate of Chantilly High School and daughter of Thomas and Linda Foley and daughter of Thomas and Linda Foley was named to Bucknell University’s Dean’s List for the fall semester in the 2008-09 academic year. Students must earn a grade point average of 3.5 or higher on a scale of 4.0 to receive dean’s list recognition.
Officer Damien Austin and K9 Smokey of the Town of Herndon Police Department will graduate from K9 School Friday, Jan. 16, 10 a.m. at the Fairfax County Police Canine Training Facility, 3721 Stonecroft Blvd., Chantilly. The 14-week basic training course includes sessions on patrol
techniques and narcotics detection and the teams are trained in tracking and locating criminal suspects, as well as endangered missing persons.
David T. Lewis, son of Samuel R. Lewis of Oak Hill, graduated from the Army ROTC Leader Development and Assessment Course, also known as "Operation Warrior Forge," at Fort Lewis, Tacoma, Wash. The primary focus of the course is to develop and evaluate each cadet's officer potential as a leader by exercising the cadet's intelligence, common sense, ingenuity and physical stamina.
