<b>Chargers Take Charge</b>
The Chantilly Youth Association Chargers, an U-11 boys’ basketball team, recently won the Fairfax County Division I postseason basketball tournament, defeating Mount Vernon in the championship game, 40-35, to win their second straight tournament championship. The Chargers also captured the league’s regular season title and won the Braddock Road Holiday Tournament. Cameron Vaughn was selected league’s Most Valuable Player, Tyler Femi was selected to the All-League team and David Sydnor was recognized as the tournament’s Most Valuable Player.
<b>Hotspur Reaches Finals</b>
The Chantilly Hotspur, a U-14 girls’ soccer team, recently participated in the Jefferson Cup Tournament, held March 21-22 in Richmond. A 2008 state cup champion, the Hotspur competed in the championship division against other state cup champions from across the country, making it to the championship game against the Massachusetts Scorpions. The Hotspur tied the Bethesda Freedom, 0-0, in the first round and then pulled out a win 1-0 against Freehold New Jersey. They had a 3-0 win against the Challenge-95 Texas team, which brought them to the finals. The Hotspur lost in the finals against the Scorpions, 3-1.
<b>XPLOSION off to 5-0 Start</b>
The Southwestern Youth Association XPLOSION took a few championship trophies home last week at the Marshall Ruritan Club “Dust off the Rust” Tournament in Bealeton. The U-12 travel softball team, which is coached Mark Greenfelder, opened the spring season with a 5-0 record. SYA XPLOSION teams compete in local and national tournaments, many finishing the spring season with the National Softball Association World Series in Roanoke. The XPLOSION will host the Kaboom Spring Classic tournament at Wakefield Park in Annandale on April 25-26.
<b>Wildcat Classic Upcoming</b>
The Centreville High School athletic boosters will host the Fifth Annual Wildcat Classic Golf Tournament on Wednesday, April 15 at Westfields Golf Club. The event will include a $100,000 shootout and $10,000 hole-in-one competitions, as well as a $2,500 putting contest. The tournament is scheduled for a 1:30 p.m. start. All proceeds will go directly to helping the athletic programs at CVHS. <b>Westfield Crew Opens Strong</b>
The Westfield crew team started the 2009 season with all four of its boats reaching the finals in last Saturday's Polar Bear Regatta on the Occoquan Reservoir. In fact, with 25 schools competing in the regatta, the strength of the Concorde District was on display as each of its three representatives, Westfield, Robinson and Oakton, had all four top boats make the finals. The Westfield boys' first varsity boat took third place, the boys' second varsity boat was victorious and the girls' boats finished fifth in each of their finals. <b>Snyder Slugging Down South</b>
Matt Snyder’s slugging percentage of .818 leads the Ole Mississippi baseball team. A left-handed hitting Westfield graduate, Snyder has had 33 at-bats this season for the Rebels. He has 11 hits, five of which are home runs. Meantime, he has accumulated 18 RBIs. Ole Miss is 17-8 overall, 5-4 against Southeastern Conference opponents. Matt Snyder’s twin brother, Mike Snyder, has made two starts and eight appearances this spring, hitting .158 (3 for 19). Last year at Westfield, Matt Snyder set a Virginia AAA state record with 15 home runs. He was named both the Concorde District and Northern Region Player of the Year and earned first team All-State honors. Mike Snyder hit .420 with seven home runs and was a first team All-Region pick. The twins’ older brother, Brandon Snyder, is in the Baltimore Orioles’ minor league system.
