The Fairfax County Public Library Board of Trustees will honor 23 volunteers and two community partners at a special awards ceremony at 7 p.m. on Tuesday, April 7 at the George Mason Regional Library, located at 7001 Little River Turnpike in Annandale. The ceremony is in honor of National Volunteer Week April 19-25. Local honorees are: John Marshall Library Carol Dickerson for exceptional service; Kingstowne Library Mary Bogdan for 1,000 service hours and Almetha Powell for 1,000 service hours; Sherwood Regional Library Emma Montgomery for 1,000 service hours, Albert Opp for 1,000 service hours and Justin Panuski for exceptional service.

Lafayette Frederick (’52) of Alexandria, received the Washington State University Alumni Association (WSUAA) Alumni Achievement Award. The award is the highest honor bestowed by the WSUAA and recognizes Frederick for his outstanding teaching, research, mentoring and contributions to the fields of botany and mycology.

The Older Girl Scouts of Troop 1351 of Alexandria joined about 90 other girls for the Hi Tech Hide & Seek program sponsored by the Girl Scouts of the Nation’s Capital at Lincoln Caverns, near Huntingdon, Pa. on Saturday, Oct. 18, and Sunday, Oct. 19, 2008. During the two-day council event the girls participated in workshops specially designed to complete the Hi Tech Hide & Seek Badge requirements.
