See the fruits of 14 Scope Gallery artisans' labors and select handmade touches to spruce up home and landscaping. The exhibit at the Torpedo Factory features vibrant original stoneware, ideal for indoors and out.

The Torpedo Factory Art Center’s Target Gallery will have special programming on Thursday, May 28 from 4-7 p.m. in conjunction with the FRESH exhibition currently in the gallery.

This will be an educational project for local youth and for the public. From 4-7 p.m. teens will be helping FRESH artist Gabriel Pons to create a graffiti-inspired mural based on the story of Charles Houston. This mural will be painted on old doors that have already been tagged by a local DC graffiti artist.

From 7-8 p.m., the gallery will be hosting a panel discussion about the "Art of the Tag". The panelists include local artist Marissa Botelho and FRESH artist Gabriel Pons. They will be educating the public on the background history and the increasing popularity of graffiti style art being used in contemporary art today.

Gallery West presents "The Power of Color," a juried show of 2- and 3-dimensional fine art celebrating the qualities of hue and color in affordable, original artwork created by regional artists. The exhibit runs from July 8 – Aug. 2 at 1213 King Street in Old Town Alexandria. A public reception will take place on Saturday, July 11 from 6 – 8 p.m. Go to www.gallery-west.com. Potomac Fiber Arts Gallery announces the opening of the juried show "Moons, Stars and Sky" on Tuesday, June 2. The artists join in the celebration of the summer solstice. Jewelry, sculpture, clothing, and wall pieces are some of the items that will be exhibited. The show will close on July 5. The gallery is located in Studio 18 of the Torpedo Factory Art Center at 105 North Union Street in Old Town Alexandria on the waterfront. The gallery is open daily from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m., except on Thursdays when it is open until 9 p.m.

* June 1-16 — Preschool Art Camp, 9:30-11:30 a.m. Explore the art and science of light and color through projects involving drawing, painting, sculpture and collage.

* June 5 — Exploring Art Together, 10-11 a.m. A 6-week course for children 1 1/2 years to 4 with an adult. Our youngest artists work with a parent or caregiver to explore clay, paint, collage, line, color and shape in activities that are collaborative, open-ended and encourage imaginative play.

* June 22-25 — Inventor’s Workshop, 9:30-11:30 a.m. Work with wire, loose parts and recycled objects to design and build sculptures and inventions. Explore concepts of motion and balance through hands-on work with materials

Opening Friday, May 22, "Living Legends of Alexandria 2008-09" will be featured in the Coldsmith Gallery at The Lyceum, Alexandria’s History Museum, 201 S. Washington St. It will feature photographs of all 27 of the nominees with information about their contributions. It will be open through Sunday, Sept. 20. On Feb. 21, Historic Mount Vernon opens "George Washington & His Generals," a new temporary exhibition.
