Sports Briefs: ASC Honors Rivers, Field Hockey Champs

Bishop Ireton's Anthony Rivers along with the co-champion Red and Green teams of the Department of Recreation's girl's field hockey program were named Athletes of the Month by the Alexandria Sportsman's Club Tuesday night, Sept. 21, at the Old Dominion Boat Club.

Rivers, a three-year standout on both sides of the ball for BI, is a team captain and carries a 2.7 GPA. He opened the season with an outstanding game in a 20-13 loss to Bishop O'Connell, scoring BI's first touchdown of the year on a 25-yard catch and run. He completed the day with four catches for 70 yards, one 30-yard kickoff return and one quarterback sack.

In field hockey, the city's inaugural season — which drew more than 100 participants — ended with co-champions between the Red and Green teams, coached by Michaela Balderson and Betty Sixsmith respectively.

The honors were presented at ASC's signature "High School Football Night" that featured the coaches from T.C. Williams, Bishop Ireton, Edison, Episcopal, Hayfield, St. Stephen's & St. Agnes and West Potomac discussing the current season. Next month's meeting is Redskins Night and will be held Oct. 19.
