— Navy Seaman Recruit Kwadwo A. Danquah, son of Barima A. Danquah of Alexandria, recently completed U.S. Navy basic training at Recruit Training Command, Great Lakes, Ill. Danquah is a 2004 graduate of West Potomac High School of Alexandria.

Air Force Airman Gregory E. Wallace graduated from basic military training at Lackland Air Force Base, San Antonio, Texas. He is the grandson of Irene Kumitis of Orville Street, Alexandria, and Lewis McDaniel of Little Stone Court, Fayetteville, N.C. Wallace is a 2008 graduate of Brentsville District High School, Nokesville, Va.

Navy Airman Melony Sot, a native of Alexandria, and a 2006 graduate of Thomas Edison High School, is currently deployed aboard the aircraft carrier USS TRUMAN in the Gulf of Oman. USS TRUMAN is presently supporting ongoing operations in Afghanistan. Sot is an aviation ordnanceman, responsible for the maintenance, repair and installation of aviation ordnance essential for the protection of ground forces. Her husband, Joshua Harding, resides in Alexandria.

Margaret A. Haley has entered Basic Cadet Training at the U.S. Air Force Academy, Colorado Springs, Colo., in preparation to enter the first academic year at the academy. She is the daughter of Louis and Barbara Haley of Westmoreland Road, Alexandria. Haley is a 2010 graduate of West Potomac High School, Alexandria.

Major Jonathan Doyle, the 1st Infantry Division provost marshal, and a native of Alexandria, was awarded the Order of the Marchaussee July 3 at Contingency Operating Base Basra. The Order of Marechaussee is awarded to military police members who uphold the highest service traditions.

Navy Seaman Recruit Shadia T. Everett, daughter of Ronnie Everett, of Alexandria, recently completed U.S. Navy basic training at Recruit Training Command, Great Lakes, Ill.

Air Force Reserve Airman 1st Class Eugene D. Bush graduated from basic military training at Lackland Air Force Base, San Antonio, Texas. Airmen who complete basic training earn four credits toward an associate in applied science degree through the Community College of the Air Force. Bush is a 2003 graduate of Bryant High School, Alexandria.

Navy Seaman Apprentice Ryan P. Glass, son of Angelique R. Glass of Alexandria, and Pat Glass, of Alexandria, recently completed U.S. Navy basic training at Recruit Training Command, Great Lakes, Ill. Glass is a 2004 graduate of West Potomac High School of Alexandria.

Army Reserve Pvt. Hilary M. Kiundi has graduated from basic combat training at Fort Jackson, Columbia, S.C. Kiundi is the brother of Felix Kiundi of Skyhill Road, Alexandria.

Marine Corps Lance Cpl. Theodore J. Kent, son of Gretchen Rhedman of Alexandria, and Thomas Kent, of Richmond, recently graduated from the Marine Corps Basic Combat Engineer Course at Marine Corps Engineer School, Marine Corps Base, Camp Lejeune, N. C. Kent is a 2007 graduate of Fork Union Military Academy of Fork Union, Va.

Navy Petty Officer 2nd Claas Brian P. Krivonak, son of Leanne Krivonak of Alexandria, along with 1, 000 fellow sailors and Marines on USS New Orleans (LPD-18), home ported in San Diego, Calif., recently embarked on a scheduled three-month deployment in support of Southern Partnership Station (SPS). Krivonak is a 1998 graduate of West Potomac High School of Alexandria, and joined the Navy in April 2007.

Air Force Airman Michael J. Vega graduated from basic military training at Lackland Air Force Base, San Antonio, Texas. He is the son of Michelle Wulffaert of Desiree St., Alexandria. Vega is a 2006 graduate of Mount Vernon High School, Alexandria.

Marine Corps Pfc. Kevin I. Carrillo, a 2009 graduate of Mount Vernon High School, Alexandria, recently completed the Marine Corps Basic Enlisted Supply Course. Carrillo joined the Marine Corps in December 2009.

Navy Seaman Recruit Gina L. Caianiello, daughter of Elaine M. Reibsamen of Hollister, Calif. and Joseph P. Caianiello, of Alexandria, recently completed U.S. Navy basic training at Recruit Training Command, Great Lakes, Ill.

More than 500 members of the New York Air National Guard received recognition for their service in a combat zone on Sunday, Sept. 12 during the 106th Rescue Wing Hometown Heroes Salute ceremony. 2nd Lt. Eugene A Finkle from Alexandria, assigned to the 106th Maintenance Squadron was recognized for service overseas. The Hometown Heroes program recognizes Airmen who deployed in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom, Operation New Dawn in Iraq and Operation Enduring Freedom (operations in Afghanistan) since Sept. 11, 2001.

John T. Conway of Alexandria earned a bachelor's degree in business administration and commissioned as a second lieutenant into the Army's infantry branch. He is the son of Randall and Brenda Conway of Alexandria and graduated from West Potomac High School in Alexandria.

Master Sergeant David Biscaro from Alexandria has reenlisted in the New York Army National Guard to continue service with the Joint Force Headquarters.

Navy Seaman Fayette A. Hardwick, son of Regina A. Hardwick of Alexandria, and Aurelio A. Padmore, of Falls Church, recently completed U.S. Navy basic training at Recruit Training Command, Great Lakes, Ill. Hardwick is a 2007 graduate of Bryant High School of Alexandria.

Mende J. Wentzel graduated from the Army ROTC (Reserve Officer Training Corps) Leader Development and Assessment Course, also known as "Operation Warrior Forge," at Fort Lewis, Tacoma, Wash. The cadet is a student at James Madison University, Harrisonburg. She is the daughter of Bruce M. and Mende M. Wentzel of Budd Way, Alexandria.

Wentzel is a 2007 graduate of Thomas A. Edison High School, Alexandria.

Army National Guard Pfc. Jimmie H. Robinson has graduated from basic military training at Fort Benning, Columbus, Ga., under the Split Option Enlistment Program. The program allows high school students between their junior and senior year to attend and complete the Army National Guard or Reserve six-week basic training program during the summer of their junior year. He is the son of Jimmie and Rika Robinson of Kidd St., Alexandria. Robinson is currently attending Mount Vernon High School, Alexandria.

Army Pvt. Jonathan Salinas has graduated from basic infantry training at Fort Benning, Columbus, Ga. He is the son of Ruth Campos of Quantrell Ave., Alexandria. Salinas is a 2008 graduate of Annandale High School.

Air Force Airman Umar Yasin graduated from basic military training at Lackland Air Force Base, San Antonio, Texas. He is the son of Mohammad and Rukhsana Yasin of Deer Run Drive, Alexandria. Yasin graduated in 2010 from Hayfield Secondary School.

Army Spec. Nickolos G. Porter has graduated from the Special Forces Candidate One-Station Unit Training at Fort Benning, Columbus, Ga. He is the son of Carol-Beth Porter of Pinion Road, Derby, Kan., and brother of Serena Porter of Strutfield Lane, Alexandria. Porter graduated in 2005 from Derby High School, and received a bachelor's degree in 2009 from Newman University, Wichita, Kan.

Army Pvt. Brandon R. Johnson has graduated from the Automated Logistical Specialist Advanced Individual Training (AIT) course at the U.S. Army Quartermaster Center and School, Fort Lee, Petersburg. Johnson is the son of Thomas J. Johnson Jr. of Austin Ave., Alexandria, Va., and Wanda P. Johnson-Arrington of Gaylord Place, Montgomery, Ala. The private is a 2009 graduate of Hayfield Secondary School, Alexandria.

Air Force Airman Kaitlin D. Sassman graduated from basic military training at Lackland Air Force Base, San Antonio, Texas. Sassman is the sister of Daniel Sassman, and Sally Sassman, both of N. Randolph St., Arlington.

Tusaine R. Williams has graduated from Officer Candidate School (OCS) at Fort Benning, Columbus, Ga., and was commissioned as a second lieutenant in the U.S. Army. Williams has served in the military for five years. He is the son of Harold C. Williams of Fayette St., Philadelphia, Pa., and brother of Shashana T. Williams of Eighth St. S., Arlington. The lieutenant graduated in 2004 from Multi-Cultural Academy Charter School, Philadelphia, and received a bachelor's degree in 2008 from Albright College, Reading, Pa.

Air Force Airman Keteris L. Tucker graduated from basic military training at Lackland Air Force Base, San Antonio, Texas. Tucker is the daughter of Lisa Johnson of San Leandro Place, Alexandria, and granddaughter of Doretha Jones of W. Evergreen St., Youngstown, Ohio. The airman graduated in 2010 from Mount Vernon High School, Alexandria.

Air Force Airman 1st Class Ariel D. Guzman graduated from basic military training at Lackland Air Force Base, San Antonio, Texas. He is the son of Abelardo Guzman of Bass Court, Alexandria. Guzman graduated in 2007 from West Potomac High School and received an associate degree in 2010 from Northern Virginia Community College, both of Alexandria.

Army Pfc. Conrad A. Colby has graduated from basic infantry training at Fort Benning, Columbus, Ga. Colby is the son of Kelly Colby of Sheridonna Lane, Alexandria, and grandson of Stacy Colby of Easton Drive, Fairfax.

Air Force Airman Nahom N. Tumalisan graduated from basic military training at Lackland Air Force Base, San Antonio, Texas. He is the son of Asmara Amdeberhan of Cannes Court, Alexandria. Tumalisan graduated in 2007 from Hayfield Secondary School, Alexandria.

Army 2nd Lt. Spencer D. Sullivan graduated from the Armor Basic Officer Leader Course at Fort Knox, Ky. He is an armor officer assigned to the 2nd Battalion, 16th Cavalry at Fort Knox. Sullivan is the son of Shaun D. and Sarah M. Sullivan of Wilkes St., Alexandria. In 2006, the lieutenant graduated from Langley High School, McLean, Va., and received a bachelor's degree in 2010 from the College of William and Mary, Williamsburg.

Army Pvt. Marvin I. Martinez has graduated from Basic Combat Training at Fort Sill, Lawton, Okla. He is the son of Rosa Martinez of Russell Road, Alexandria. Martinez graduated in 2008 from Mount Vernon High School, Alexandria.

Navy Seaman Marcus D. Fleming, son of Wanda A. Fleming and stepson of Ronald B. Jewell of Alexandria, recently completed U.S. Navy basic training at Recruit Training Command, Great Lakes, Ill. Fleming is a 2010 graduate of Thomas Edison High School of Alexandria.

Army Pfc. Andrew M. Tiongson has graduated from the Infantryman One Station Unit Training at Fort Benning, Columbus, Ga. The training consists of Basic Infantry Training and Advanced Individual Training. Tiongson is the son of Brenda Eiseman of Digby Green, Alexandria. The private is a 2008 graduate of the Word of Life Christian Academy, Springfield.

Army Pvt. Michael S. Annino has graduated from the Basic Field Artillery Cannon Crewmember Advanced Individual Training course at Fort Sill, Lawton, Okla. Annino is the son of Michael F. Cranston of Lagrange St., Lorton, Va., and Gina M. Annino of Alexandria. His wife, Kiley, is the daughter of Megan L. Canady of Woodbridge. The private is a 2009 graduate of Woodbridge Senior High School.

Marine Corps Pfc. David M. Annan, son of Stephanie C. Annan of Kershaw, S.C., and Kevin M. Annan, of Alexandria, recently graduated from the Marine Corps Basic Combat Engineer Course at Marine Corps Engineer School, Marine Corps Base, Camp Lejeune, N.C. Annan is a 2010 graduate of Andrew Jackson High School of Kershaw, S.C., and joined the Marine Corps in June 2010.

Army National Guard Spec. Johnny Kilroy has graduated from basic combat training at Fort Jackson, Columbia, S.C. Kilroy earned distinction as an honor graduate. He is the son of John Kilroy of Marlboro Lane, Eugene, Ore., and brother of Stephen Kilroy of N. Adams St., Arlington. The specialist graduated in 2003 from Hayfield Secondary School, Alexandria, and received a bachelor's degree in 2008 from Virginia Tech University, Blacksburg.

Air Force Airman Carl H. Mase graduated from basic military training at Lackland Air Force Base, San Antonio, Texas. He is the son of Carla Ronk of Battersea Lane, Alexandria, and grandson of Bill Ronk of Osprey Landing, Panama City, Fla. Mase graduated in 2010 from Mount Vernon High School, Alexandria.

Air Force Airman Jason M. Frank graduated from basic military training at Lackland Air Force Base, San Antonio, Texas. He is the son of Kenneth Frank of Blackalder Drive, Alexandria. Frank graduated in 2007 from Forest Park High School, Woodbridge.

Army Reserve Brig. Gen. Michael J. Silva of Alexandria was elected President-elect of the Reserve Officers Association at its national convention Feb. 2. He will begin his 2-year term as President in 2013. During his 20 years in Army Reserve units, he has held operations, training, senior staff, and command positions in various assignments to include deployments to Afghanistan, Iraq and Qatar. He also served a tour in the Pentagon in the Iraq Interagency Support group resolving issues between the Department of Defense and the Department of State. Most recently, he deployed as the Commanding General of the 411th Engineer Brigade in Balad, Iraq supporting the Multi-National Corps Iraq.

General Silva, a native of Manhattan, Kan. who currently resides in Alexandria, is a Senior Associate with Booz Allen Hamilton in McLean, in his civilian career.

Army Pfc. Brittany B. Jefferson has graduated from basic combat training at Fort Jackson, Columbia, S.C. She is the daughter of Tonya D. Jefferson of Abbington Drive, Oxon Hill, Md., and granddaughter of Sharon Drinkard of Price St., Alexandria. Jefferson graduated in 2010 from Oxon Hill High School.

Army National Guard Pvt. Werner Van Der Heyde has graduated from Basic Combat Training at Fort Sill, Lawton, Okla. Van Der Heyde is the son of Leroy and Maria Van Der Heyde of Reading Ave., Alexandria.

Air Force Airman 1st Class Kyle M. Knupp graduated from basic military training at Lackland Air Force Base, San Antonio, Texas. He is the son of Bryan and Terry Knupp of McLendon Court, Alexandria. Knupp graduated in 2007 from Thomas A. Edison High School, Springfield.

Coast Guard Seaman Mitchell S. Piontek, a 2010 graduate of West Potomac High School, Alexandria, recently graduated from the U.S. Coast Guard Recruit Training Center in Cape May, N.J. Piontek and other recruits received instruction on the Coast Guard's Core Values -- Honor, Respect and Devotion to Duty -- and how to apply them in their military performance and personal conduct. Piontek will join 36, 000 other men and women who comprise the Coast Guard's workforce.

Army Pvt. Keith A. Muschek has graduated from Basic Combat Training at Fort Sill, Lawton, Okla. Muschek is the son of Jill and stepson of Nick Chit of Wyndham Circle, Alexandria.

Navy Seaman Apprentice David R. Ratcliff, son of Pilar M. and Ralph O. Ratcliff of Alexandria, was recently promoted to his current rank upon graduation from recruit training at Recruit Training Command, Great Lakes, Ill. Ratcliff is a 2010 graduate of West Potomac High School of Alexandria.

Army Reserve Pfc. Cole S. Warner has graduated from basic infantry training at Fort Benning, Columbus, Ga. He is the son of Roger Warner of Sage St., Cokeville, Wyo., and Tamara Stolpe of Broadmoore St., Alexandria. Warner graduated in 2007 from Cokeville High School.

Air Force Airman Jessica Bradley graduated from basic military training at Lackland Air Force Base, San Antonio, Texas. She is the niece of Jennifer Bradley-Farmer of Dogue Forest Court, Alexandria, and Jacque Bradley-Washington of Quitman Mountain Way, Round Rock, Texas. Bradley graduated in 2009 from Pflugerville High School, Texas.

Army Cadet Mende J. Wentzel has received the George C. Marshall Award during an awards ceremony at the Marshall Center, Virginia Military Institute in Lexington. The cadet is a student at James Madison University, Harrisonburg. Wentzel is the daughter of Bruce M. and Mende M. Wentzel of Budd Way, Alexandria, and granddaughter of Fred Mullins of Cabrillo Ave., Coronado, Calif. Her grandmother, Helen Wentzel, resides on Springbrook Road, Omro, Wis. Carter is the daughter of Lawrence M. Carter of Kings Manor Drive, Alexandria. The private is a 2007 graduate of Hayfield Secondary School, Alexandria.

Army Master Sgt. Stephen A. Burnley graduated from the U.S. Army Sergeants Major Academy at Fort Bliss, El Paso, Texas. Burnley is an air defense artillery senior sergeant and has served in the military for 18 years. He is the son of Stephen and Lucretia Burnley of Habersham Way, Alexandria. The master sergeant graduated in 1989 from Bishop Ireton High School, Alexandria.

Navy Ensign Megan E. McGarry, daughter of retired Air Force Col. Brian J. and Elizabeth N. McGarry of Alexandria, was recently commissioned upon graduation from the Naval Reserve Officer Training Corps (NROTC) Program with Naval Reserve Officers Training Corps Unit, University of Notre Dame, Notre Dame, Ind. McGarry is a 2007 graduate of Georgetown Visitation Preparatory High School of Washington, D.C. She is a 2011 graduate of University of Notre Dame, Notre Dame, Ind. with a BBA degree.

Coast Guard Seaman Christopher J. Graves, son of John S. Graves, of Alexandria, recently graduated from the U.S. Coast Guard Recruit Training Center in Cape May, N.J.

He is the son of Alice Piontek of Clifton Farm Court, Alexandria. The airman graduated in 2008 from West Potomac High School, Alexandria.

Air Force Airman Angel L. Bush graduated from basic military training at Lackland Air Force Base, San Antonio, Texas. He is the son of Dale Collier of Parkcenter Drive, Alexandria, and nephew of Debbie Forbes of Ross St., Kissimmee, Fla. Bush graduated in 2009 from North Kissimmee Christian School, Kissimmee.

Sara Mathewson of Alexandria was among the 13 members of The University of Scranton's Class of 2011 who were commissioned as second lieutenants in the U.S. Army during the Jesuit school's commencement exercises held recently on campus. Mathewson has been assigned to the Transportation Corps.

Julianne Tortolano has been commissioned as a second lieutenant in the U.S. Army after successfully completing the Army ROTC (Reserve Officers' Training Corps) program. She is the daughter of William T. and Mary Ann Tortolano of Achilles Court, Alexandria. Tortolano graduated in 2007 from Bishop Ireton High School, Alexandria.

Marine Corps Lance Cpl. Theodore J. Kent, son of Gretchen Rhedmon of Alexandria and Thomas Kent of Richmond, recently participated in Exercise African Lion held in Morocco, Africa, with members of his battalion, Bravo Company, 4th Combat Engineer Battalion based out of Roanoke. This exercise is one of many Joint Theater Security Cooperation Programs the U.S. Military participates in to foster good relations with allies while building cross-military joint efforts.

Navy Master Chief Petty Officer John F. Thorne has deployed to Southwest Asia on a temporary assignment at an undisclosed air base to serve as the Central Command's Forward Headquarters First Sergeant. He is the son of Edward and Chizuko Thorne of Ashfield Road, Alexandria. His daughter is Michelle Thorne of Borden Road, San Marcos, Calif. Petty Officer Thorne graduated in 1981 from Hayfield High School, Alexandria.

Chris Cummings has graduated from the U.S. Military Academy at West Point, N.Y., as a classmate of the academy's Class of 2011. He received a bachelor's degree and was commissioned as a second lieutenant in the Army. Lt. Cummings is the son of Army Col. MaryAnn B. and Steve M. Cummings of Bayliss Place, Alexandria. He is also a second generation West Point graduate. His mother graduated in 1982, the third class to accept women.

Lt. Cummings is currently at the Infantry Officer Basic Course at Fort Benning, Ga., and will stay at Fort Benning to complete The Army's Ranger School starting in October.

Air National Guard Maj. Eric D. Patterson led the Air Force Central Command's Band "Blue Hawk" while deployed to four countries in the Greater Middle East. The band members help build troop morale and public diplomacy while touring the area of responsibility.

Patterson is commander of the Air National Guard Band of the Southwest at Channel Islands Air National Guard Station, Calif. The major has served in the military for 14 years.

He is the son of Bill and Dwayla Patterson of Shoal Creek Lane, Rockwall, Texas, and the grandson of Marcelle Smithson of Mercedes Lane, Fallbrook, Calif. His wife, Mary, is the daughter of Mark and Stella Scafidi of Pebble Creek Court, Pennington, N.J. Patterson received a bachelor's degree in 1994 from Evangel University, Springfield, Mo.

Navy Petty Officer 2nd Claas Brian P. Krivonak, son of Leanne Krivonak of Alexandria, and fellow Sailors and Marines aboard the amphibious transport dock USS New Orleans, home ported in San Diego, Calif., recently participated in detainee handling training while conducting a two-week certification exercise off the coast of Southern California. Krivonak is a 1998 graduate of West Potomac High School of Alexandria, and joined the Navy in April 2007.

Navy Seaman Ronald J. Pieper, a 2009 graduate of Mount Vernon High School, Alexandria, recently completed U.S. Navy basic training at Recruit Training Command, Great Lakes, Ill. During the eight-week program, Pieper completed a variety of training which included classroom study and practical instruction on naval customs, first aid, firefighting, water safety and survival, and shipboard and aircraft safety. An emphasis was also placed on physical fitness. The capstone event of boot camp is "Battle Stations". This exercise gives recruits the skills and confidence they need to succeed in the fleet. "Battle Stations" is designed to galvanize the basic warrior attributes of sacrifice, dedication, teamwork and endurance in each recruit through the practical application of basic Navy skills and the core values of Honor, Courage and Commitment. Its distinctly ''Navy'' flavor was designed to take into account what it means to be a Sailor.

Navy Petty Officer 2nd Claas Brian P. Krivonak, son of Leanne Krivonak of Alexandria, and fellow Sailors assigned to amphibious transport dock ship USS New Orleans (LPD 18) and embarked Marines of the 11th Marine Expeditionary Unit (MEU) participated in a community service project at the House of Family children's shelter in Sihanoukville, Cambodia.

Army Capt. Jeffrey J. Gunlicks has returned to Joint Base McGuire-Dix-Lakehurst, N.J., after being deployed to Iraq serving in support of Operation New Dawn. Gunlicks, an officer in charge of the Taji Projects Office attached to the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Washington, D.C., has served eight years in the military. The captain is a resident of Cannes Court, Alexandria.

Army Command Sgt. Maj. Joseph L. Legra has returned to Joint Base McGuire-Dix-Lakehurst, N.J., after being deployed to Iraq serving in support of Operation New Dawn. Legra, the command sergeant major with the 275th Combat Sustainment Support Battalion, Fort Lee, has served 27 years in the military. He is a resident of Ashby Lane, Alexandria.

He is the son of Linda Dewey of Woodland Hills Drive, Eagle, Neb., and Robert Jarecke of Ambassador Way, Alexandria. Jarecke graduated in 1988 from Pius X High School, Lincoln, Neb., and received a bachelor of arts in 1992 from St. Johns University, Collegeville, Minn. Navy Petty Officer 3rd Class Robert H. Dougherty, son of Holly H. Dougherty of Alexandria, and Stephen A. Dougherty, of Alexandria, is currently deployed. Dougherty, along with fellow Sailors and Marines aboard the aircraft carrier USS Enterprise (CVN 65), hosted a material, maintenance and management assist (3MA) team, as they evaluated the ship's 3M program.

The 3MA team consists of senior enlisted members ranging from chief petty officers to master chief petty officers from Commander, Naval Air Force's 3M training department. They are responsible for assessing Enterprise's 3M program and training Sailors to be more successful at 3M.

Dougherty along with fellow Sailors and Marines aboard the aircraft carrier USS Enterprise (CVN 65) and Carrier Strike Group (CSG) are conducting training and promoting the Sexual Assault Awareness Month (SAAM) campaign throughout the month of April.

Ramon F. Concepcion has received an Army ROTC (Reserve Officers' Training Corps) scholarship to George Mason University, Fairfax. Scholarships are awarded on a merit system in areas such as academic achievement, extracurricular activities, physical fitness, specific performance or accomplishment, leadership abilities, and personal interviews. Scholarship recipients are enrolled as members of the ROTC Corps of Cadets. Concepcion is the son of Ramon and Linda Concepcion of Quantico Gateway Drive, Triangle. He graduated in 2010 from Mount Vernon High School, Alexandria.

Marine Corps Pvt. Naim K. Olverson, son of Aurelia C. Carr- Olverson of Alexandria and Arthur F. Olverson of Columbia, Md., earned the title of United States Marine after graduating from recruit training at Marine Corps Recruit Depot, Parris Island, S. C. For 13 weeks, Olverson stayed committed during some of the world's most demanding entry-level military training in order to be transformed from civilian to Marine instilled with pride, discipline and the core values of honor, courage and commitment. One week prior to graduation, Olverson endured The Crucible, a 54-hour final test of recruits' minds and bodies. Upon completion, recruits are presented the Marine Corps emblem and called Marines for the first time.

Navy Lt. Cmdr. Sarah T. Self-Kyler, daughter of Linda and Burl Self of Alexandria, VA and fellow Sailor aboard the aircraft carrier USS Enterprise (CVN 65) formed a Coalition of Sailors against Destructive decisions committee. CSDD is a peer-to-peer mentoring program geared toward assisting Sailors in making positive decisions in all areas of their lives. The program was originally created for those in ROTC, JROTC, and similar programs. However, it quickly spread throughout the Navy ahd it is now a resource for all Sailors.

Self-Kyler is a 1999 graduate of Kickapoo High School of Springfield, Mo. and joined the Navy in May 1999. She is a graduate of U.S Naval academy, Annapolis, Md. with a MS degree.

Department of the Army Civilian Kimberly Ross recieved an Army Contracting Command Contracting Excellence Award during the U.S. Army Contracting Command's third annual contracting awards ceremony. Ross is a contract specialist assigned to the Mission and Installation Contracting Command at Yuma Proving Ground, Ariz. She has worked in federal service for three years. She is the daughter of Terry Ross of Yuma, Ariz., and Sandra Ross of Alexandria, Va. She is the granddaughter of Michie Kosaka of Lahaina, Hawaii.
