During a recent volunteer workday, the McLean Trees Foundation (MTF) planted two native Fringetrees and one American Hornbeam tree along Chain Bridge Road in Lewinsville Park in memory of McLean resident Joyce Crandall. Donations from the McLean Citizens Association (MCA) and others funded the purchase and planting of the trees. The trees mark the entrance to Lewinsville Park and enhance the natural gateway to the business and residential community of McLean.

“MTF is honored to share in keeping the memory of Joyce Crandall alive,” said Joyce Harris, Chairman of the Board of MTF. “The Fringetree has fragrant, white, fleecy flowers in the spring and the American Hornbeam tree is noted for its strong wood. The trees will improve our environment, bring enjoyment to the entire McLean Community, and serve as living memorials to Mrs. Crandall.”

MTF encourages residents to support its tree sponsorship program. Sponsored trees are incorporated into MTF’s annual planting program on sites slated to receive MTF trees in the spring and fall. People, pets, anniversaries, birthdays or other events can be recognized through the program with a minimum contribution of $500. MTF’s website project map shows the location of the tree and the name of the honoree. The donor receives a commemorative card indicating the type and location of the tree.

“This is a great way to honor someone in your life or to celebrate an event in your life and to also support the beautification of our community,” said Frank Crandall, co-chair of the Environment, Parks, and Recreation Committee of MCA. “I am pleased that we could honor my late wife, Joyce, in this manner and that the trees will help restore our urban forest in McLean.”
