As part of its work towards attaining “Green Flag Status” in the National Wildlife Federation's Eco-Schools Program (www.nwf.org/Eco-Schools-USA.aspx), Longfellow Middle School began a lunchtime food recovery program. At the end of each lunch period, unopened food is collected by Longfellow Eco-Ambassadors. Food is stored in a refrigerator, donated by Food Bus, Inc. (www.facebook.com/FoodBus), a non-profit created by Kathleen Weil to help schools stock food pantries and reduce lunchtime waste. The first 10 days of the program resulted in 46 pounds — two coolers full — of food donations. Food donations will be delivered weekly to Columbia Baptist's Food Pantry (https://columbiabaptist.org/foodpantry), which provided food to more than 5,000 households last year.
