The Bishop O’Connell boys’ tennis team won the WCAC championship.

O’Connell Boys’ Tennis Wins WCAC Title

Bishop O'Connell won the Washington Catholic Athletic Conference boys’ tennis championship at Olney Manor Recreational Park on Sunday, May 3.

The O’Connell Knights finished the singles portion of the tournament trailing Gonzaga, defending five-time champion, by one point, but they won all three doubles flights to capture the conference title for the first time since 1982.

The Knights finished with 35 points, followed by Gonzaga (27) and Good Counsel (22).

The Knights were represented in the final day of play with players in seven of the nine championship matches. The Knights won four out of nine championship matches.

Patrick Hughes and Erick Rivas won the No. 1 doubles championship, Kevin Shepard and Luke Brinkmann won the No. 2 doubles championship and Gianni Snidle and Shaun Freeman won the No. 3 doubles championship. Luke Brinkmann added a singles title at No. 4.

Yorktown Girls’ Lax Blanks Wakefield

The Yorktown girls’ lacrosse team (8-3) beat Wakefield 14-0 on May 1 in Arlington.

Yorktown jumped to a quick 5-0 lead and controlled the pace of the game throughout.

Yorktown held Wakefield to only two shots in the first half. Led by senior goalie Erin Morrissey (6 saves), Yorktown recorded its second shutout of the season. Close defenders Kaleigh Day, Jasmine Towner, Maddie Reicherter, and Gigi Richardson were the key players for the Yorktown defense that forced nine turnovers and had 12 successful clears.

Offensively, Yorktown got contributions from 10 different players: sophomore Laura Crawford (1 goal, 5 assists, 2 draw controls); junior Emma Thurman (2 goals, 2 assists, 3 draw controls); senior Kristen Somers (2 goals, 1 assist, 1 draw control); junior Kate Grattan (2 goals, 1 assist); freshmen Claire Kuwana (2 goals, 1 draw control); freshman Sarah Bloomquist (1 goal, 2 assists, 2 draw controls); senior Kaleigh Day (1 goal); senior Margaret Doyle (1 goal, 1 draw control); junior MacRae Knight (1 goal); junior Kathleen Herrlein (1 goal).

Yorktown faced Langley on Tuesday, after The Connection’s deadline. The Patriots will travel to face Westfield at 7:30 p.m. on Friday, May 8.
