Herndon Offers Fall Fun

Family fun events at Herndon Community Center and ArtSpace.

Herndon offers some fall fun for residents of different ages. Herndon Community Center at 814 Ferndale Ave. will host a Pinkalicious Halloween on Sunday, Oct. 18, 12:30-3 p.m. at their Pinktastic Halloween event. Activities will be themed around the pink-loving girl, Pinkalicious. Designed for ages 3-5, children can have their faces painted and have the opportunity to color Halloween treat bags and take it through a candy buffet, all pink, of course!

Oct. 17 and 18 will be the dates of Herndon’s Frying Pan Farm Park Harvest Days Celebration. This free event requires no reservations, and is an opportunity to watch the cider press in action, milk a goat or a cow, shell corn, peel apples, meet farm animals and see traditional farm demonstrations. Frying Pan Farm Park is located at 2709 West Ox Road in Herndon.

Games and crafts will run from 6:30-7:30, show will be from 7:30-8 p.m. The fee is $8/child in advance, $11/child on day of event.

HERNDON’S COMMUNITY ART GALLERY, ArtSpace Herndon, is curating a Halloween extravaganza featuring talented female jazz vocalists: Candice Bostwick, Rhonda Atkins and YazooZazz! The vocalists will be accompanied by D.C. area’s well known jazz pianist, Wayne Wilentz and jazz virtuoso bassist, Ralph Gordon. The event is Saturday, Oct. 31, 7 p.m. to 10 p.m. and will be hosted at 750 Center Street, Herndon. Doors open at 6:30 p.m. Tickets are $15. Complimentary hors d’oeuvres and soft drinks will be provided.

Candice Bostwick is a local northern Virginia jazz and blues singer. She has performed at local venues like Twins Jazz in D.C. and Blues Alley through the Jazz Workshop. She competed in the D.C. Singers Jazz Jam at the Black Fox in D.C. Wayne Wilentz is a keyboardist and composer who has performed with such famous R&B acts as the The Coasters and The Shirelles. He has been playing Brazilian and American Jazz in D.C. since 1989.

Monday, Oct. 19, Herndon High School Choir will present a Fall Concert at the Herndon High Auditorium, from 7:30 to 9 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 24, at 9:30 a.m., Herndon High School will host its annual Homecoming Parade in downtown Herndon along Elden Street. The Herndon Homecoming parade features floats from student organizations, local businesses, as well as special guests. The theme selected this year is “Superheroes.”

THERE ARE THREE OPTIONS for groups to participate in the parade. Groups can create a traditional vehicle-based float, create a pedestrian powered walking float, or may walk as a group in the parade. Those walking are encouraged to display a banner, dress in costume or otherwise execute creative activities to celebrate the theme and the Homecoming festivities. Floats will be judged on creativity and theme interpretation in the categories of School Group, HHS Class Float, Performing Group, Civic Group and Show Group. The Richard F. Downer Theme Award and Major Robert E. Church Best in Parade award will also be presented. Herndon Community Television or HCTV will be taping this year’s event.
