Vienna Crime Reports

Tax Season Scam - During this time of year, Tax Season, many residents report receiving calls from individuals claiming to be employees of the IRS. The callers claim the resident has either committed tax fraud or had improperly filed previous tax returns. The caller informs the resident to send a Western Union payment or purchase a prepaid debit card, for payment, or the resident will be arrested. This type of call is a scam. Never send a payment unless you have verified the validity of the caller.

Please Note - Recently there have been reports of callers claiming to be relatives or representatives of a relative. The callers claim they have been arrested and in order to be released from jail the resident needs to wire a payment to an attorney or the jail. The payment is usually requested in the form of a prepaid debit card or through Western Union. This type of call is a scam. Never send a payment unless you have verified the validity of the caller.

Incidents

Fraud - 200 Block Locust St., SE. Between Oct. 27, 2015 at midnight and November 6, 2015 at midnight. A resident reported money being fraudulently taken from her savings account through several ATM transactions.

Fraud - 700 Block Meadow Lane, SW. Between March 3 at noon and March 4 at 9 a.m. A resident advised he received a telephone call from a male who he thought was his grandson. The caller stated he had been arrested in the Dominican Republic and needed bond money. The resident was advised to send the money by Western Union, which he did. A short time later a male called identifying himself as a sergeant, advising his grandson now needed additional money for the fine and money for a plane ticket home. After sending additional money the resident feared this may be a scam and reported the incident to our department.

Vehicle Tampering - 1000 Block Moorefield Creek Road, SW. March 4, 6:22 p.m. A resident reported a bag containing shoes and a tie he had recently purchased were stolen from his vehicle while it was parked in his driveway. The resident was uncertain if he had left his vehicle unlocked.

Petit Larceny - 200 Block Cedar Lane, SE. March 5, 2:07 a.m. A cab driver reported that his male passenger had run off without paying his fare. Officers were able to locate the passenger who apologized to the driver and paid him the amount owed. The cab driver was satisfied with the outcome and did not wish to pursue charges.

Arson - Oak Street at Cottage Street, SW. March 5, 3:16 a.m. Officers responded to assist the fire department with a report of a vehicle fire. Three citizens flagged down officers advising they were just returning to one of the citizen’s homes in the area when they noticed a fire in the bed of a truck parked on the corner. The three individuals worked to extinguish the fire, putting the fire out before officers arrived.This case has been turned over to the Fairfax County Fire Marshal's Office for further investigation.

Petit Larceny - Flagship Carwash, 540 Maple Ave., West. March 5 between 1 p.m. and 1:45 p.m. A citizen reported his wallet went missing from his vehicle while he was at the carwash.

Suspicious Event - 400 Block Victoria Court, NW. March 5 between noon and 4:14 p.m. A resident received several packages addressed to him from Ebay containing watches that he did not order. He notified Ebay of the situation and they advised him they were not aware of any problems. The Ebay user who made the purchases was using the resident’s name and address, however the resident has not incurred any loss from the purchases. The resident will continue to follow up with Ebay to resolve the issue.

Arrest - Narcotics Violation - 100 Block Center Street, North. March 5, 8:49 p.m. Officers responded to a report of a suspicious person. They located the man sitting in his parked vehicle, who appeared to be disoriented when they spoke to him. The officers also observed prescription bottles in the vehicle. An officer arrested the 44-year-old man from Marcliff Court in Vienna and charged him with Public Intoxication and two counts of Possession of Narcotics. The man was transported to the Fairfax County Adult Detention Center. Once at the Detention Center, the man was found to be in possession of additional illegal narcotics. He was then charged with Prisoner in Possession of Narcotics and held on a $3000 bond.

Animal CaseQuarantine - 600 Block Meadow Lane, SW. March 6, 5:20 p.m. A resident advised he was walking his poodle on Meadow Lane when a german shepherd and another dog got out of their backyard and attacked his dog. Officers observed a bite mark on the poodle’s back that the resident advised was caused by the german shepherd. An officer made contact with dogs’ owner and advised them of the quarantine procedure.

ArrestDriving on a Suspended License - 500 Block Maple Avenue, West. March 6, 11:27 p.m. An officer observed a vehicle with defective equipment and initiated a traffic stop. After interacting with the driver it was determined that he was operating the vehicle on a suspended license. The 36-year-old man from Patrick Street, SE in Vienna was arrested for Driving After Forfeiture of License. He was transported to the Fairfax County Adult Detention Center and held on a $1000 secured bond.

Animal Case - East Street at Hine Street, SE. March 7, 6:50 a.m. An officer responded to the report of a sick raccoon. Upon arrival he determined the raccoon could not be saved.

Vehicle Tampering - 1100 Fairway Drive, NE. Between March 8 at 5 p.m. and March 9 at 9 a.m. A resident reported someone entered his vehicle and its contents had been rifled through. Nothing was missing from the vehicle. He advised he had left his vehicle parked on the street and left unlocked.

Vehicle Tampering - 100 Block Saint Bernard Drive, NE. Between March 8 at 7 p.m. and March 9 at 9:15 a.m. A resident reported someone entered his locked vehicle, which was parked in the driveway, and took a rain jacket, a key to his home and some change.

Vehicle Tampering - 400 Block Old Courthouse Road, NE. Between March 8 at 7:00 p.m. and March 9 at 10:53 a.m. A resident reported someone entered his unlocked vehicle, which was parked in the driveway, and stole an iPod Touch.

Grand Larceny - 300 Block Old Courthouse Road, NE. Between March 8 at 8:30 p.m. and March 9 at 7:07 a.m. A resident reported someone entered two of his unlocked vehicles, which were parked in the driveway, and stole sunglasses, an iPhone, currency and a water bottle.

Vehicle Tampering - 1000 Block Westbriar Drive, NE. Between March 8 at 9 p.m. and March 9 at 7 a.m. A resident reported someone entered her unlocked vehicle, which was parked in her driveway. She advised that nothing appears to be missing from the vehicle.

Vehicle Tampering - 400 Block Course Street, NE. Between March 8 at 10 p.m. and March 9 at 8 a.m. A resident reported someone entered her unlocked vehicle, which was parked in her driveway, and took three small bags containing make-up, first aid supplies and other miscellaneous items.

Vehicle Tampering - 400 Block Old Courthouse Road, NE. March 9 between midnight and 7:45 a.m. A resident reported someone entered his unlocked vehicle, however, nothing was taken.

Trespassing - 900 Block Echols Street, SE. March 9 between 11:59 a.m. and 1:59 p.m. A homeowner reported a female was at his home, which is currently under construction. He had previously advised the female she was not allowed on the property, however she had come back. Officers responded and spoke to a contractor working on the house who advised the female parked her vehicle in the driveway, then she walked away when he asked her why she was there. Officers located the female at her home. Her husband advised she has been suffering some psychiatric problems recently. The homeowner responded to the scene and trespassed the woman, who stated she understood she was not allowed back on the property.

ArrestDriving While Intoxicated - Ayr Hill Avenue and Center Street, NW. March 10, 1:18 a.m. An officer observed a driver commit a series of traffic violations and initiated a traffic stop. Upon his interaction with the driver he determined the he may have been impaired. After failing a series sobriety tests he arrested the 22-year-old man from Glen Meadow Court in Centreville for Driving While Intoxicated. He was transported to the Vienna Police station where he was given the opportunity to provide a sample of his breath for analysis. After the analysis he was transported to the Fairfax County Adult Detention Center where he was charged with Driving While Intoxicated.

Animal CaseQuarantine - 900 Block Glyndon Street, SE. March 10 11:30 a.m. A resident reported his son was bitten on his leg by a neighbor’s dog while retrieving a ball from the neighbor’s yard. It was unclear if the wound was actually caused by one of the neighbor’s two dogs or if it was caused when he jumped the fence running from the dogs.Both dogs are current with their rabies vaccinations. The neighbor has agreed to a 10-day quarantine procedure for the dogs.

Mental Case - Cedar Lane Center, 101 Cedar Lane, SW. March 10, 12:19 p.m. An officer responded to assist the school staff with a student who made statements that he wanted to harm himself.After the officer spoke with the student and his father it was determined that he was in need of further evaluation. Officer Slebonick transported him to a local health facility for treatment.

Animal CaseQuarantine - 100 Block Roland Court, SW. March 10, 2:30 p.m. A resident reported being bitten on the leg by her father’s dog while she was trying to bathe it. The resident was in need of medical treatment but refused rescue and was going to follow up with a local medical facility. The quarantine process was explained to the resident and her father, but they decided they wanted the dog euthanized and tested for rabies. ACO Barker transported the dog to the Fairfax County Animal Shelter and turned custody over to their technicians, where they will euthanize and test the dog.

Trespassing - Dairy Queen, 304 Maple Ave., West. March 10, 8:59 p.m.

The owner of the restaurant advised he wanted a former employee trespassed from the property. The man was recently fired from another Dairy Queen location, but has relative working at this restaurant. Officers located the man standing behind the counter acting like he worked at the restaurant. He then advised the officers he does not work there, but wanted to visit his relative. The man was removed from the property and advised that he would be arrested if he returned. He then left the area without further incident.

Crashes

100 Block Pleasant Street, SW. March 5, 1:30 p.m. The owner of a legally parked vehicle returned to find it had been struck by an unknown vehicle.

300 Block Church Street, NE. March 5, 3:13 p.m. A vehicle was traveling westbound on Church Street, NE when the driver observed a group of pedestrians waiting to cross the road. One of the pedestrians, a 5-year-old juvenile, darted out in front of the vehicle. The driver did not have time to stop and struck the juvenile. The juvenile was transported to an area hospital with non–life threatening injuries.

Yeonas Drive at Ware Street, SW. March 7, 7:08 a.m. The first vehicle was traveling eastbound on Yeonas Drive approaching the intersection with Ware Street. The second vehicle was northbound on Ware Street, and turning right onto Yeonas. Both drivers stated they came to a stop at the 4-way stop sign, but did not see the other approach until after the accident.

820 Follin Lane, SE. March 8, 7:24 a.m. A vehicle was driving inside the multi level parking garage of Navy Federal Credit Union. The vehicle was on the 2nd floor of the garage, making a left turn onto the ramp toward the third level of the garage. The driver did not see a pedestrian, who entered the roadway from between parked vehicles, and she struck the pedestrian.

Fairfax County Fire and Rescue personnel responded to the scene and evaluated the pedestrian, however she declined to be transported to the hospital.

300 Block Dominion Road, NE. March 8, 2:49 p.m. The first vehicle was a pick-up truck pulling a trailer that was traveling southbound on Dominion Road. While the driver was passing a large dumpster the side of the trailer hit the dumpster causing it to spin and strike the second vehicle which was legally parked.

127 Maple Avenue, West. March 10, 4:59 a.m. A vehicle was traveling westbound on Maple Avenue when the driver ran off the roadway and struck a building, causing damage to the front structure and glass windows. The cause of the driver losing control was not known. The driver was transported to the hospital for non-life threatening injuries.
