Opinion: Letter to the Editor: Questioning Use of Parking Spaces

Despite the fact that the Indigo Hotel on Union Street has a Special Use Permit (SUP) indicating that valet parking is to accommodate 120 room guests, 80 diners and work staff, it is now advertising monthly parking, which I would not have believed it to be true, had I not seen this with my own eyes. Yes, this hotel appears to be gaming the system by decreasing the availability of their 60-plus underground parking spaces. Will they be now theoretically be renting out those spaces, leaving hotel guests to park on the already crowded streets? This specific area has already had drastically reduced parking with the eventual elimination of 100 parking spaces opposite Chadwicks and the “at large” spaces at the former Art League building. The City Council is contributing to the decline of the Old and Historic District if they allow pranks like this. The City Council needs to start managing in a way that will benefit its citizens and visitors, or eventually, there will be fewer in either category.
