Scrawl Books Celebrates Its Third Anniversary in Reston

Scrawl Books will celebrate its third anniversary on Nov. 24 during Small Business Saturday, an unofficial holiday encouraging shoppers to patronize locally-owned merchants during the year’s busiest shopping weekend.

Best-selling author, Newbery Medalist and founding Editor of Versify/HMH Books for Younger Readers, Kwame Alexander, will kick-off the celebration at 11:30 a.m. during a small party and book signing.

Following the celebration and Alexander’s book signing, the store will host authors throughout the day, including children’s favorites Ann Marie Stephens, Megan Wagner Lloyd and Tracey Kyle; middle grade writers Daniel Wheatley and Patty O’Connell Pearson; mystery writer Maya Corrigan and local favorites, Chuck Cascio and Lou Babb.

Author Meg Keeshon McGovern, will discuss and present We’re Good, her non-fiction book about a young man dealing with paralysis.

“We are thrilled to celebrate three years in business, and grateful for the support we receive from so many amazing writers and the people of Reston,” said Rachel Wood, owner and founder of Scrawl Books.

Wood spent more than 20 years as a librarian and collection development specialist, forging relationships with authors and publishers. When Reston was left without a store dedicated to new book sales, she used her experience, skills and connections to create Scrawl Books.

“I believe that an independent bookstore is a good fit for this area,” Wood said. “Although small retailers face many challenges, community-based businesses offer tremendous economic and social benefits.”

Since opening its doors, the store has moved from Reston Station to the Reston Town Center. It now occupies a storefront on Freedom Drive.

Scrawl hosts events each week, including book clubs, story time, and discussions and signings with best-selling authors.

The small business supports literary events at libraries, schools and community centers, and was recently featured on The Great American Read on PBS.

Throughout the holiday season, Scrawl Books will be hosting several special events. For a complete list of activities and authors visiting the store on Small Business Saturday and throughout the month of December, check the store’s website at www.scrawlbooks.com.
