Before: Situated behind walls and French doors, the original dining room did not work any better as a living room. Because of effective interior zoning, the new open plan gains space but does not sacrifice privacy.

The transition was surprisingly easy. In the previous act, John and Mary Millette were living with two growing sons in a 5,000-plus-square-foot house in Charleston.
