Cody Schneider, 8, of Fairfax controls a robot in an attempt to shoot a ball into a hoop as his mother and David Joyner, 18, watch at the Maker Faire. Joyner, a senior at South Lakes High School, helped build the machine with other members of the school’s FIRST Tech Challenge team. The competition challenges teams around the country to design, build, program and operate robots in a head-to-head challenge.
