Officer Dies in Crash on Bradley

Capt. Joseph Aloysius Mattingly Jr of the Montgomery County Police died in a one-vehicle collision while on patrol in Bethesda last weekend.

At approximately 3:30 a.m. on Sept. 13, a resident on the 7300 block of Bradley Boulevard was awakened by a noise and went to investigate. The resident discovered the collision at the same time a passing motorist arrived on the scene. Together, the two civilians summoned help and offered comfort to Mattingly until officers and rescue personnel arrived on the scene.

Mattingly was transported to a local hospital where he was pronounced dead from his injuries at 5:30 a.m.

A Lieutenant at the time of his death, Mattingly was posthumously promoted to the rank of Captain on Sept. 15.

Mattingly, 51 of Damascus, joined the Montgomery County Police in March of 1975. He was acting as Duty Commander for the department and was on patrol when he was killed.

Preliminary investigations indicated the Mattingly lost control of his vehicle while traveling west on Bradley Boulevard just before the Beltway overpass. Anyone who was in the area at the time is asked to call the police’s Collision Reconstruction Unit at 301-840-2435.
