Supervisor John Cook (R-Braddock) and members of the Fairfax County History Commission gathered at the intersection of Dunleigh Drive and Braddock Road on Sunday, May 5, to dedicate a new historical marker commemorating the “Bog Wall Ambush,” an 1861 Civil War skirmish. The Fairfax County History Commission hosted the dedication ceremony, which was followed by a reception at historic Oak Hill.
White Oaks Wins Science Olympiad Medals
With 22 different categories from engineering, chemistry and forensics to medical science, children from the fifth and sixth grades at White Oaks Elementary in Burke worked hard to make it all the way to the state level of the Science Olympiad tournament.

Reston Girl Competes for Miss Virginia Title
Sara S. Gouda, the daughter of Sabri A. Gouda of Reston, is a state finalist in the National American Miss Virginia Pageant. She will compete with other pre-teen aged girls from across Virginia at the Reston Hyatt July 25-27 of this summer. Sara—who plays piano, games, soccer and volleyball—also likes reading, singing and spending time with her family.

Reston Accessibility Committee—Award and Leadership
Last Tuesday, I went to the Fairfax County Government Center or “Taj Mahal,” as it is called by some, to watch the Board of Supervisors present citizen awards and issue grand proclamations. I was there to applaud presentation of the Community Partnership Award to an especially deserving Reston group, the Reston Accessibility Committee (RAC) of the Reston Citizens Association.

Week in Herndon
The 129th edition of Cole Bros. Circus of the Stars is coming to Dulles Town Center. The classic, American-style circus, complete with elephants, tigers, aerialists and acrobats, mystifying magic and hilarious clowns, will appear for performances on Friday, May 10, 4:30 and 7:30 p.m.; Saturday, May 11, 1:30, 4:30 and 7:30 p.m.; and Sunday, May 12, at 1:30, 4:30 and 7:30 p.m.
Farmers Markets Open In Herndon
Thursdays are Herndon Fun Days from July 11 to Aug. 29.
Thursday, May 2, marked the opening of two farmers markets in Herndon, one in the Town of Herndon, and the other at Frying Pan Farm Park. Fairfax County has been a strong supporter of local farmers markets. As stated on their webpage, products sold at farmers markets are produced by vendors within 125 miles of Fairfax County.
Friday Night Live in Herndon
Gonzo's Nose opens new concert season on the Town Green.
Friday, May 3, marked the first Friday Night Live concert of the season for the Town of Herndon. This popular concert series began with a performance by the band Gonzo’s Nose, a Virginia-based band that has been performing since 1996. This year is the 19th season of Friday Night Live. Like all previous shows, this performance was held on the Town Green between the Herndon Fortnightly Library and the Herndon Municipal Center. The annual series brings many cover bands to Herndon to perform with no tickets or reservations required.
Oak Hill Students “Plant It” With Dominion
On Arbor Day, April 26, the third-graders at Oak Hill Elementary School had a chance to get their hands dirty and plant some trees. It was all part of Dominion Virginia Power’s environmental program Project Plant It!, a fun and educational way to help the children learn about trees and the environment.

Spring for Alexandria 2013

For three days, thousands of Alexandrians came together for the 6th Annual Spring for Alexandria, a citywide weekend of events that focuses on giving and service throughout the community. Co-sponsored by ACT for Alexandria, Volunteer Alexandria, the Alexandria Jaycees and the City of Alexandria, the series of events kicked off May 2 with the ACT Generations of Giving Gala at the U.S. Patent and Trade Office.
Sengel Honored
SAR presents Law Enforcement award.
The George Washington Chapter of the Sons of the American Revolution awarded the Law Enforcement Commendation Medal to Commonwealth's Attorney S. Randolph Sengel for his distinguished career enforcing the laws of the Commonwealth of Virginia. Sengel was presented the award April 27 in a ceremony at Belle Haven Country Club. He has served as a prosecutor in Alexandria since 1979 and was first elected Commonwealth's Attorney in 1997.

Those children on Mill Street on Saturday, the ones in the parking lot across from the Town Green surrounded by Vienna police officers, were not being charged with a traffic violation. They were, instead, being guided around a training course by Vienna police in Vienna’s 2nd Annual W&OD Safety and Bike Rodeo sponsored by the Town of Vienna Bicycle Advisory Committee, Friends of the W&OD and local civic groups and businesses.
