West Potomac senior Tamaric Wilson made a name for himself intercepting passes as a defensive back for the school’s football team. On Jan. 17, it was basketball Wilson wrestled away from an opponent to lift the Wolverines to victory.
Geenen’s Unselfish Play Leads Churchill to Victory

Churchill senior Thomas Geenen, sporting long blue sleeves, squared up in the left corner and, with a smooth stroke, buried his first 3-pointer of the season during the second quarter against Walter Johnson on Jan. 13. After the game, Geenen, teammate Sam Edens and head coach Matt Miller each acknowledged the display of perimeter potency. However, Geenen’s biggest contributions to Friday’s victory over the rival Wildcats were prolonging possessions and finding ways to get quality shots for his teammates.
Holy Child Leads Horse Competition
Competing against 16 other teams, Connelly School of the Holy Child's "riding tigers" tied for top honors at the recent JV horse show in the Inter School Horse Show competition. Competitions are held monthly at schooling barns, with 37 teams from the metropolitan area in the league.
Sharpshooting Woodson Boys Beat T.C. Williams

The T.C. Williams boys’ basketball team trailed Woodson by two points midway through the fourth quarter and was in search of a defensive stop when the Cavaliers passed the ball to Peter Murray, who was standing alone at the top of the arc. Murray, a reserve post who had yet to score, let fly from long range, burying a 3-pointer that left TC head coach Julian King slumping forward in disbelief in front of the Titans’ bench.
Herndon Girls Looking for Elusive First Win in District
Hornets have lost close games in Concorde to Westfield, Centreville, and Chantilly.
The Herndon High girls’ basketball team came up just short in a 49-46 overtime loss at Concorde District opponent Westfield last Friday night. Westfield, one of the better teams in the Northern Region, improved its record to 11-5 overall and 2-2 in district play. Herndon, meanwhile, slipped to 8-7 and 0-4.
Stallions Defeat Wolverines in Patriot District Basketball
South County improves district mark to 6-4 with win.
The South County Secondary boys’ basketball team continued its impressive play of late with a 72-54 Patriot District home win over West Potomac this past Tuesday night, Jan. 24. The win was the fourth for the Stallions in their last five games and improved their record to 11-7 overall and 6-4 in district play.
Oakton Remains Undefeated in Girls’ Basketball

The Oakton High girls’ basketball team is annually a formidable team and one of the top outfits in the state of Virginia. The Cougars won region crowns in 2009 and 2010. Last year, after winning the Concorde District tournament title and then reaching the Northern Region tournament semifinals, they saw their season end with a round of four defeat to West Springfield High. That setback, which ended the Cougars’ season and prevented them from qualifying for the state tournament, was Oakton’s first and only loss of the season and ended their hopes of winning a third straight region crown.
Westfield Boys Enjoying Outstanding Hoops Season

The Westfield High boys’ basketball team continued a season in which it has emerged into one of the top teams in the Northern Region by defeating defending Concorde District champion Herndon, 73-62 in overtime, last Friday night, Jan. 20. The road victory improved the Bulldogs’ record to 13-3 overall and 4-0 in the district. Herndon, which went as far as the Northern Region semifinals last year, fell to 7-8 and 2-2.
`Team Concept’ Going a Long Way for Fairfax Girls

The Fairfax High girls’ basketball team did not stay down for long following a 58-46 Liberty District loss to first place Madison High on Monday, Jan. 17. The setback, which snapped a three-game win streak for the Rebels, hardly had a lingering affect for Fairfax, which came back to win its next two district games on the road.
Oakton Out-touches Chantilly in Concorde Swim Meet

Oakton High School's varsity swim and dive teams took to the water against Chantilly High School on Friday night, Jan. 6 at Oak Marr Recreation Center. Oakton's boys and girls fought to the finish, and held tight to their undefeated record this season. The boys won 160-155, and the girls won 177-135.
Additional Manpower Boosts Herndon High Wrestling
Hornets have good showing over break at Loudoun Holiday meet.
One year has made a positive difference for the Herndon High wrestling team. Last winter, the Hornets had a skeleton line-up with just five varsity team members. This season that has all changed as Herndon has enough personnel to fill out each weight class in competitions. Wins have been hard to come by, but at least Herndon is able to compete at all of the weight classes.
McLean Edges Rival Saxons in Girls’ Basketball
Langley boys, meanwhile, remain unbeaten in Liberty play at 8-0.
In a girls’ high school basketball cross-town rival matchup last week, the McLean Highlanders edged the Langley Saxons, 40-38, in the Liberty District contest played at Langley High School. McLean, with the win, improved its overall record to 8-7 overall and 4-3 in the district. Langley, meanwhile, saw its record fall to 5-11 and 4-4.
Bishop Ireton Boys Match Overall, WCAC Win Totals

Third-year Bishop Ireton boys basketball coach Neil Berkman said the team’s rebuilding process is proceeding as planned, calling the Cardinals a "program on the rise." On Jan. 16, however, Ireton was "dismantled" by an already established Bishop O’Connell program.
