Korean Bell Garden Marks Anniversary

Anniversary celebration brings more than 350 visitors to Meadowlark Gardens.

On Saturday, May 25, visitors to Meadowlark Botanical Gardens in Vienna were granted free admittance. This was due to the first anniversary celebration of the completion of the park’s Korean Bell Gardens. The celebration began at 11 a.m. and brought more than 350 visitors to the park.

Benefit for the Great Falls Optimist Youth Fund and Student Scholarship Award

The Great Falls Optimist Club held a Wild West Dance Fest hosted at the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 8241 in McLean, on 1051 Spring Hill Road. The event had a live band, "Bennie Potter and Western Electric" and barbecued ribs and chicken from Famous Dave’s on Saturday, Oct. 19, from 7 to 11 p.m. This was a ticketed event to raise funds for the Great Falls Optimist Youth Fund and Student Scholarship Award.

United Bank Robbed

Officers were called to 7787 Leesburg Pike on Tuesday, Oct. 15 at 11 a.m. for a robbery. A man entered the bank and demanded money from the teller. The suspect fled with cash. There were no injuries.

St. Timothy’s Episcopal Church Hosts Annual Chili Cook-off

St. Timothy’s Episcopal Church in Herndon held their annual Chili Cook-off on Saturday, Nov. 9. The event was well attended, with 17 different chilies in the competition. The previous year, there were 12 chilies in the competition.

Festival on the Square Returns Oct. 27

The 5th annual Festival on the Square is Sunday, Oct. 27 from noon until 4 p.m. at Reston Heights, 11750 Sunrise Valley Drive, Reston. In addition to hosting the Cornerstones (formerly Reston Interfaith) Help the Homeless Community Walk, Festival on the Square offers a full afternoon of free family fun including live entertainment, a petting zoo, a hay maze, trackless train rides, face painting, moon bounce, giant slide, children’s activities, trick-or-treating, plus the Z Car Club’s Judging and People’s Choice Award.

Herndon High School senior Blake Morgan was honored at the school auditorium with the presentation of an All-American Bowl jacket from local soldiers, in the company of friends, family, fellow band mates and students. "We are thrilled Blake is representing us," said Herndon High Band Director Kathleen G. Jacoby.

One local elementary school is a champion at brainy sports. One of Forestville’s 11 Odyssey of the Mind teams is going to the World Finals in Iowa for the third year in a row after landing first place at the national-level competition in Rocky Mount recently. The finals will take place from the 28th through the 30th at Iowa State University.
