Transformations Exhibit Opens with Full Crowd

MPA Summer Exhibit June 12- Aug. 2.

“Transformations: From One Thing to Another” opened at the Emerson and Atrium Galleries in the McLean Community Center with a reception on June 12, attracting the pensive and the liveliest of artists, students, and community members from the D.C. Metro area.

Where can one find Malala Yousafzai, Blanche DuBois, Philip Wang, HUCCI and Dolly Parton on the same stage? They are all characters in Yorktown High School’s One-Person Shows, to be presented at Yorktown High School’s Black Box Theatre, on Thursday, April 24, from 6-9 p.m., Friday, April 25, from 4-9 p.m. and Saturday, April 26, from 1-10 p.m. Admission is free. The One-Person Shows are 30-minute productions written, staged, and acted by the senior Yorktown theatre students. The productions are a culminating project in the Yorktown Theatre Arts Program, requiring self-reflection, research, writing and rehearsal.

Letter to the Editor: Healthy Eating At Hospital Cafe

To the Editor: With a vast number of choices for dining out in the nation’s capitol, gourmet restaurants and economical eateries abound. The region provides a chef’s paradise and a variety of tastes to please the palates of a diverse population. Often overlooked are the hospital cafeterias that have, in the past, been the unfortunate victims of consumer disdain. However, with the advent of a focus on healthy eating and nutritional diets in recent years, a local hospital has become attuned to the reality of putting into practicing good health and wise nutrition. Inova Alexandria Hospital is at the forefront of this movement.

Spotlight on Child Safety

Upon becoming aware of "National Missing Children's Day," Margo Chisholm who heads Child Services in the Alexandria Public Library became its advocate in the City of Alexandria. Educational materials were shared throughout the City's schools, libraries and law enforcement offices.†The success of her efforts will be on display at the Beatley Central Library this coming Friday, May 25, throughout the afternoon.

Workhouse to Host Farmers Market, Mount Vernon Nights

The Workhouse Arts Center has announced two new events taking place throughout the summer on the Workhouse Quad. The Workhouse Farmers Market will begin in May and Mount Vernon Nights at the Workhouse will begin in June.
