More MathCounts Success Coached by Rocky Run Middle School’s MathCounts coach, teacher Melanie Roller, Virginia’s MathCounts team came in fifth last week in national competition. And one of the team members, Rocky Run eighth-grader Robin Park, was ranked 11th in the U.S. in the individual standings. In March, Rocky Run’s MathCounts team won the state championship, and Robin, the team captain, finished second in the state. So he got to compete on Virginia’s team in Nationals, May 10-11, in Orlando, Fla., with the other three highest scorers in the state, and Roller coached them.

Building, Road Construction Ahead
New and exciting projects are on the horizon in the Sully District. Below are some of them: COMMERCIAL DEVELOPMENT Inova Fair Oaks Hospital Currently, many local residents needing radiation or other oncology treatments go to Inova Fairfax Hospital to receive them. But a new, fourth, medical office building on the Inova Fair Oaks Hospital campus would bring these services closer to home. Inova Fair Oaks plans to construct that building, plus more parking and a new entrance from Rugby Road. Hospital representatives hope to have the medical office building completed and occupied by the end of 2013.

Willow Springs Parents Hoping for a Traffic Signal

It’s not a done deal, yet. But if the traffic volume at the intersection of Braddock Road and Willow Springs School Road warrants it, a traffic signal will someday be installed there. And it can’t come soon enough for Willow Springs Elementary parents and schoolbus drivers. In the meanwhile, the Wink-o-matic flashing lights on Braddock—telling drivers nearing that intersection to slow from 45 to 25 mph—have been reinstated after having been removed during the summer.

Despite the fact that Man Ha Park left his wife and daughter to run off with another woman, they both testified on his behalf before he was sentenced for murdering that woman’s sister. But neither their pleas nor tears could save him from being sentenced to 40 years in prison for a killing so brutal that the prosecutor called the crime scene “a blood bath — worse than in many horror movies.”
Making the Holidays Bright for Needy Children

For many local families, the holiday season isn’t about Christmas carols and pretty decorations. It’s about worrying how they’ll keep their children warm in the coming winter and explain to them why Santa can’t bring them any presents this year. And that’s where the all-volunteer, nonprofit Our Neighbor’s Child comes in, working to make sure that no child in need in Centreville, Chantilly, Clifton, Fair Oaks and Fair Lakes goes without holiday gifts.
