The Grammys 2013 included a “dress code” which propelled most attendees to bring their most glamorous fashions to the limelight. Letter: Bookfair in Support of School
On Friday, May 17, the Barnes & Noble at Fair Lakes will host a book fair to raise funds for the Mountain View High School Scholarship Foundation. From 5-9 p.m., families can enjoy face painting, storytelling, bookmark making, musical performances and an art display while purchasing books for graduations, birthdays or personal enjoyment.

Twenty-five models with Down syndrome rocked the runway at the Global Down Syndrome Foundation “Be Beautiful, Be Yourself” Gala on Wednesday, May 8, at the Ritz Carlton in D.C. The fashion show and fundraiser is designed to raise awareness about Down syndrome, one of the most frequent chromosomal conditions affecting an estimated 400,000 Americans.

Bill Kristol to Speak at GOP Women Meeting
The Republican Women of Clifton (RWC) June meeting will feature Bill Kristol, editor of The Weekly Standard, who will speak about “The Political Situation.” The event will be on Wednesday, June 26, at the Fairview Elementary School, 5815 Ox Road, Fairfax Station. The social hour will begin at 7 p.m. when refreshments will be served. President Alice Butler-Short will open the business meeting at 7:30 p.m., after which Kristol will present his topic and answer questions.
Dr. Ericksen Joins Kaplan Center
Jeffery Ericksen, MD, an expert in regenerative medicine, joined the Kaplan Center for Integrative Medicine team, June 6. Before joining the Kaplan Center, Dr. Ericksen served at the Hunter Holmes McGuire VA Hospital as an attending physician and as the director of the hospital’s Interventional Pain Clinic and Polytrauma Network Site. Dr. Ericksen also holds an associate professorship at the Virginia Commonwealth University Medical College Department of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation.

Nathan F. (Red) Holeman died on Dec. 24, 2013. He was born July 16, 1925 to George and Hazel Holeman in Tuxedo Junction on the outskirts of Bartlesville, OK.

Kiwanis Conducts Service Leadership Programs Night
The Mount Vernon Kiwanis Club hosted a Service Leadership Programs Night at the Mount Vernon Country Club on Feb 20, which featured presentations from young men, women and students involved in community service and leadership activities at schools in the area. Attending the event were local school administrators, educators, principals, and advisors such as Deborah Tyler, Fairfax Country Public Schools Cluster IV assistant superintendent; Principal Nardos King, Mount Vernon High School; Principal Cliff Hardison, West Potomac High School; Principal Maura Caulfield, Stratford Landing Elementary School; Assistant Principal Kaaren Lowder, South County High School; and Kim Taylor-Wilson, acting coordinator of Student Services at Northern Virginia Community College. Students in attendance were youth leaders in their Kiwanis family of clubs including Circle K International, Key Clubs, Builders Club, and K-Kids.
Herndon High Cadets Finish Eighth in National Orienteering Championship
Herndon High School's Navy Junior Reserve Officers' Training Corps (NJROTC) cadets defeated 19 of the best orienteering programs in the nation to finish eighth.
