Cristina O'Brien, 25, grew up in Long Island, N.Y., and knew that one day she would work with Spanish-speaking immigrants. She heard about AmeriCorps, a national service program that offers a stipend and college tuition reimbursement, while majoring in Spanish at American University. She searched for a position that would allow her to work with Spanish-speaking and immigrant children, and when she was placed at Community Lodgings in 2013, it was the perfect fit.

Cornwell Farm Tours Generate $3000 for Lift Me Up!
A beautiful warm spring day set the backdrop for a successful day of tours of Cornwell Farm on March 8. The tours of the historic home and grounds generated over $3000 for Lift Me Up’s "Good Fences" project. The Lift Me Up! door prize was won by Janice Thrush of Great Falls. Ms. Thrush won a "Winner’s Circle Package" from Lift Me Up! which includes a section of fence, a copy of Secretariat’s Meadow, a Lift Me Up! hat/t-shirt and a Lift Me Up! calendar, a $200 value.

Music That ‘Will Stick in Your Craw’
Numerous attractions slated For the McLean Day 2012 Stage.
Washington Area Music Award (WAMMIE) winning musical group Scott Ramminger and the CrawStickers will play a wide mix of favorites and original songs on the House Stage of the McLean Community Center’s (MCC) McLean Day 2012: Celebrating Our Hometown festival on Saturday, May 19. The festival will be held from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. at Lewinsville Park, 1659 Chain Bridge Road. Festival admission is free and includes all onstage entertainment.

County Libraries Promote Summer Reading
Fairfax County Public Library began its 2013 Summer Reading Program on June 18, three days before the official first day of summer. Ted Kavich, Program and Educational Services manager for the Fairfax County Public Library, is directing this year’s program. “This will be my third year running the summer reading program,” said Kavich. “Our program involves more than 20 library branches with sponsors and performers,” said Kavich. “It has been a regular thing, and kids and parent look forwards to it. … We partner with the schools in this because we do not want kids to loose their reading and vocabulary skills.”
Lopez Studios Inc. Sends Students To 2014 Junior Theater Festival
The famed "Thoroughly Modern Millie" once traveled to the Big Apple to explore the world outside her little town of Salinas and make her dreams come true. From Jan. 17-19 a group of 11 talented young performers from Lopez Studios, Inc. Performing Arts Preparatory School will travel to Atlanta, Ga., to make their own dreams come true at the 2014 Junior Theater Festival and to portray the classic Broadway hit featuring Millie.
