On Friday, Jan. 17, school music teachers collected instruments at the Music Loft in Herndon. These musical instruments had been collected by the Council for the Arts of Herndon Play it Forward instrument drive. “We start the Play it Forward Campaign again in April,” said Laura Readyoff, who is on the board of directors for the council and the co-owner of the Music Loft.

The madness and mayhem, not to mention the meat pies, were the theme of the night as Brooke Curran and ACT's Running Brooke Fund raised more than $7,500 for local charities including ACTion Alexandria, Community Lodgings, The Reading Connection, Child and Family Network Centers and Girls on the Run at a special benefit performance of “Sweeney Todd” Aug. 7 at The Little Theatre of Alexandria.

Still recovering from a double mastectomy in 1995, Lawson founded the city's annual Walk to Fight Breast Cancer, which celebrated its 17th anniversary Oct. 20 and raised more than $90,000 to fund mammograms and other diagnostic screenings for Alexandria women who are not adequately insured to obtain medical care.
