Herndon Celebrates Labor Day
25th Herndon Labor Day Festival attracts area residents.
The Town of Herndon held its 25th Herndon Labor Day Festival, on Monday, Sept. 2 from on the Town Green at 777 Lynn Street next to the Municipal Building. For $20, attendees received admission to hear the music, a tasting glass and unlimited wine tastings, plus four beer tastings with the option to purchase more. For $10, a person could enter to hear the music.

ArtSpace Herndon Hosts Cinema and Brew Series

On Friday, Sept. 6 ArtSpace Herndon hosted its first Art House Cinema and Brew. The movie selected to kick off the new series was the cinema classic “Metropolis.” Directed by Fritz Lang, Metropolis was the first feature length movie of the science fiction movies genre. Giorgio Moroder, a music producer, released a version with a soundtrack by rock artists such as Freddie Mercury and Adam Ant in 1984. Ann Rust, wife of Delegate Tom Rust, and a board member for the Herndon Foundation for the Cultural Arts, welcomed everyone to the event.
Reston Association Holds Biannual Yard Sale
The Reston Association held a biannual yard sale at the parking lot near the organization’s office at 12001 Sunrise Valley Drive on Sept. 7. Shoppers and vendors mingled from 8 a.m. to 12:30 p.m., enjoying the nice weather. The event organizer, Ashley Soloff, developed the idea of a community yard sale sponsored by the Reston Association. The idea was well received, as some neighborhoods in Reston do not permit individual yard sales.

St. Joseph’s Parish Holds Annual Craft Fair
The St. Joseph’s Ladies Society held its annual craft fair on the last Saturday of October. The fair was held at St. Joseph’s Parish Hall, a large, well-lighted space with ample on-site parking available. “This is our ninth year and our biggest year ever,” said Lisa Kimpflen.

On Nov. 2, the newest Fairfax County fire and rescue station No. 42, Wolftrap had a grand opening open to the public.
Vienna Oktoberfest Brings Fun, Food and Gemütlichkeit on Oct. 5
Town Green and Church Street become a festival ground from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m.
Vienna Oktoberfest, sponsored by the Vienna Business Association in cooperation with the Town of Vienna, runs Saturday, Oct. 5, from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. in the historic Church Street corridor. The event kicks off at 11 a.m. with Rocknoceros on the Children’s Stage on the Town Green, and the School of Rock on the main stage in the Beer and Wine Garden. The Beer and Wine Garden will be open for entertainment and food at 11 a.m. and for beverage purchase at noon. The beer garden is cash only and an ATM will be available there.

Cheti, a new charity based in Arlington, is an educational development program that strives to aid the impoverished people of Tanzania, Africa by providing funds to local schools and aiding students in acquiring a higher level of education.

Circus Artwork Wins International Award
Applegate Gallery owner creates whimsical piece for picture-framing competition.
Sara Applegate, whose framing and art gallery sits on Church Street, won an international competition in late January for a framed artpiece. To call Applegate’s interpretation a “frame,” is akin to calling a Ferrari just a car. The piece, whimsical yet complex, features five three-dimensional circus vignettes. The individual components are mostly vintage lead collector pieces. “Once I found those, I fell completely in love,” said Applegate, who picked up several character pieces at the Frederick Antique Emporium. Two pieces were created in 1948 by Britains, a lead soldier manufacturer that produced a circus collection series. The remaining three vignettes were produced by the same company in 1998. Applegate bought those on E-Bay.
Viewpoints: What are your plans for 2013?
The main event of 2013 will be to commemorate the unveiling of the plaque honoring the Freeman Store's inclusion on the National Register of Historic Places. This is scheduled for Saturday, April 6. The Freeman Store is the only building in the Town of Vienna that is on the National Trust's register.
Letter: Park Authority’s Clarification
John Lovaas addressed the need to preserve and manage natural areas in Fairfax County [County Failing to Preserve Natural Resource Areas, Reston Connection, Dec. 12-18, 2012]. Although we concur with that need, we felt compelled to clarify several points in his column pertaining to the Fairfax County Park Authority’s 23,136 acres of parkland.
