This Week in Potomac Mandatory Water Restrictions Could Last a Week When a 54-inch water main in Chevy Chase at the intersection of Connecticut Avenue and Chevy Chase Lake Drive ruptured Monday evening, March 18, the result was a geyser shooting approximately 30 feet high and the immediate loss of 60 million gallons of water. To ensure continued water supply for all WSSC customers and for fire protection and hospital/medical uses, Washington Suburban Sanitary Commission (WSSC) General Manager Jerry N. Johnson Tuesday morning called for mandatory water restrictions for all WSSC customers.

Local Author Wins Book Award
The Nautilus Book Award has named its 2013 Gold Winner in Religion/spirituality: “Faith Beyond Belief: Stories of Good People Who Left Their Church Behind.” Author Margaret Placentra Johnston holds degrees from the Pennsylvania College of Optometry (BS, OD 1982), and the Catholic University of America (BA, 1973. MA, 1974.) From 1983 to 2003 she operated her own private optometric practice in Springfield and currently sees patients part-time in Alexandria and Georgetown.

Fairfax County police have charged a Lorton man with abduction, sexual battery and two counts of impersonating a law enforcement officer. He is Kedrick Evans, 48, of 7317 Ardglass Drive.
Help Feed Hungry Children
Last year, Centreville Elementary created a backpack program at the school to help feed students in need when school’s not in session. Through this program, children identified by CES as requiring some food assistance are given a small bag with enough food to get them through the weekend. The goal on Sept. 29 is to fill 700 bags with food for these students.

Week in Fairfax
The first-ever 5K walk dedicated to crime victims in Fairfax County will be held in honor of the 2013 National Crime Victims’ Rights Week. This free event is slated for Sunday, April 21, at 4:30 p.m., at Fairfax Corner. It’s hosted by the Victims Services Section of the county Police Department and the Fairfax County Law Enforcement Foundation. Area residents may join the professionals who support local victims of homicide, trauma, sexual and domestic violence, child physical and sexual abuse, stalking human trafficking and suicide as they walk together.

The City of Fairfax launched a new website Monday— Our Parks, Our Future—where citizens can engage, communicate and collaborate with the Fairfax Parks and Recreation Department and other residents on a new parks master plan for the city.
