Donations Made by FAS to Enhance Fields
“As part of a continued commitment to honor Fairfax County residents, Fairfax Adult Softball [FAS] took the initiative to improve several Fairfax County Park Authority softball fields this spring,” according to John Carney, FAS President. FAS donated over $110,000 to improve infields at Braddock Park, Nottoway Park, Lake Fairfax Park and Mason District Park.

Refugees from Slavery: Contrabands in Washington, D.C., and Northern Virginia
The National Park Service and the Office of Historic Alexandria will co-sponsor a program called Refugees from Slavery: Contrabands in Washington, D.C., and Northern Virginia on Thursday, Nov. 8, 2012, at the Alexandria Black History Museum from 6:30-8:30 p.m. The program will consist of two parts. Initially, Professor Chandra Manning of Georgetown University will explain the history of the Contrabands, men and women who escaped slavery during the Civil War. Afterward, there will be further discussion about who the Contrabands were and how they can be remembered by a panel consisting of researchers, descendants, rangers, and local historians from across the region.
Man Charged: Drugs, Weapons Crimes
A Centreville man was among more than 100 people arrested recently as part of a nearly year-long operation by three law-enforcement agencies. He is Kevin Young of Bull Run Post Office Road in Centreville. He was charged with two counts of drug distribution and one count of possessing a firearm while in possession of schedule I or II narcotics. He was arrested Aug. 19, but police didn’t release that information until last week, when they released details of the operation. Participating were officers and detectives with the Fairfax County and Prince William County police departments, plus the Virginia State Police.
NOVA Labs Sponsors ‘Take-apart’ Day
NOVA Labs threw open its doors on Saturday, May 11, to host a “Take-Apart” day, for the Girls Excelling in Math and Science (GEMS) Club from Langston Hughes Middle School in Reston. The 12 Hughes seventh graders could hardly wait for safety instructions and raced to pick out their pieces of equipment from bins of recycled phones, computers, answering machines and electronic games.
Bus-Transfer Building and Project Details
Part of the Stringfellow Road park-and-ride lot expansion will be the construction of a 1,345-square-foot bus-transfer building. Architect John Wirth, of Ritter Architects, talked about it during last week’s public meeting.

The races drew in nearly 1,600 runners and walkers to Brambleton Town Center, where members of the Junior ROTC program from Chantilly presented the colors, followed by the playing of the national anthem. The colorful sound of a large bell rang by former Washington Redskins wide receiver Darnerien McCants signaled the start of the 5K and 10K races. The bell was part of a larger display of the “Bells of the Fallen,” which honor American service men and women who served in Operation Iraqi Freedom, Operation Enduring Freedom in Afghanistan and Operation New Dawn.
