Letter: Burke Centre Becomes One of Fastest Growing Amtrak Stations

Amtrak recently posted rider numbers for 2012 and 2011 for every station in the nation. While ridership increased nationally 3.5 percent, Virginia’s ridership increased a whopping 8.3 percent and boasted the third (“Lynchburg Train,” stopping at Burke Centre) and fourth (“Newport News Train,” stopping at Woodbridge) fastest growing of the country’s 46 passenger services.

Health Department Confirms Raccoon in Clifton Incident Had Rabies

Fairfax County Police investigated three separate incidents of wild animal bites at the end of last week, including a report of a Clifton man being awakened around 11 a.m. on March 3 by a raccoon in his home. The next day, police said the Health Department confirmed the raccoon tested positive for the rabies virus.

Sending Carlos Silva Home to Brazil

Investigator Carlos Silva is going home to his sister and daughter in Brazil. He died Thursday, July 2 in an accident during a bicycling event at the World Police and Fire Games. Two other athletes were injured in the crash.

The Medical Examiner ruled Oct. 3 that Potomac resident Carolyn Mattingly’s death was a homicide, caused by a gunshot wound.

Obituary: Mary Jacobs

Mary Alva McNey Jacobs, of Boynton Beach, Fla., formerly of Alexandria and Washington, D.C. died March 16, 2014. She was preceded in death by her husband of more than 70 years, David Edward Jacobs, Jr. She was the devoted mother of one daughter, Barbara. Alva was born in Washington, D.C. on July 2, 1923 to Mary Irene Bartels and Walter Alexander McNey. She attended Roosevelt High School in Washington, D.C. graduating in 1941.

Obituary: R. Tucker Winn

Tucker Winn, who was a Fairfax County Public School teacher for 25 years, died at Mount Vernon Hospital on June 23, 2012 of a stroke. She was 85 years old.
