It’s college decision time for Fairfax County seniors, and college-bound students and their parents are encouraged to attend an upcoming program that deals with binge drinking on college campuses. "The Perils of the College Drinking Culture" will be presented by the Unified Prevention Coalition of Fairfax County, in collaboration with the Fairfax County Police Department, in April and May at locations across the county.

So it was clear that firefighters in front of Cabin John Volunteer Fire Department Station 30 on Falls Road were not filling a pool to cool off.
New Accessible Community Playground Opens at Southview Community Church
Southview Community Church invites all to the grand opening of a new accessible community playground on Sunday, Sept. 8. Southview Community Church recently completed its goal of raising funds to renovate and expand its playground, making it into an accessible playground where all children can come and have fun. “Many people in the Herndon and Reston community come and enjoy the playground all throughout the week,” said Pastor William Attaway. “We want to provide a safe and fun environment where parents, grandparents and caregivers can come and bring kids. We believe every person matters to God, and they matter to us too. Part of being a community church is showing love to our community, and this playground is one small way we can do that.”

High school students across Fairfax County will have the opportunity to put a creative twist on their computer talents this spring as they take part in the Council for the Arts of Herndon’s ninth annual SAIC Technology and the Arts Competition. The innovative program challenges students in all Fairfax and Arlington County high schools to create works of animation, digital art, digital music and digital photography, blending technology and artistry into one cutting-edge masterpiece.

Frank Wheaton is a Life Scout since 2009 with Boy Scout Troop 995, which meets at St. Bernadette Catholic Church in Springfield. Every Life Scout, besides earning merit badges, can choose to organize and lead a service project as part of the rank advancement requirement for Eagle Scout.
Local Girl Scout Troop Earns Bronze Award
Girl Scout Junior Troop # 1742 in Fairfax will be completing their efforts to earn the Bronze Award, a leadership adventure and the highest honor a Girl Scout Junior can achieve. In their pursuit to make a difference, these 12 girls from Willow Springs Elementary School chose to raise awareness and to support the research efforts of Cockayne Syndrome (CS), a rare disease that touched the life of one of the troop members in a very personal way. The disease results in slow growth in babies as well as rapid aging (a form of progeria). As part of their project, the girls researched the syndrome, spoke with families affected by the disease and collectively planned ways they could disseminate information to their neighborhood and to a broader population. They developed an informational brochure and a poster display and designed a plan to support the Cockayne Syndrome International Conference.

To the Editor: On May 15, Amy Smith, a resident of the Nethergate community, located at the intersection of Bashford and Abingdon Roads, attended a meeting of the Board of Architecture Review (BAR) in order to petition the Board for a Certificate of Appropriateness, allowing her to retain the new windows she had installed which in part were made of vinyl. I attended this meeting and was stunned by the rudeness of this board.

Combating Speeding
McGruff leads anti-speeding effort as school year begins.
Laurel Ridge Elementary School students got a surprise Monday morning, when they were met by McGruff the Crime Dog, Supervisor John Cook (R-Braddock) and Officer J.T. Frey of the Fairfax County Police Department (FCPD) in Kings Park West. The trio was there to remind student and their parents of the importance of driving safely and especially following the posted speed limits in school zones. The outreach effort, in support of the police department’s Operation Blue Guardian, is part of Supervisor Cook’s ongoing campaign to combat speeding and unsafe driving in our communities.

The recently passed Virginia transportation funding bill HB 2313 is not favorable to northern Virginia. It eliminates cents per gallon tax at the pump that is estimated to generate $4.5 billion during the 5 years ending 2018 and imposes new taxes that generate an estimated $5.9 billion during the same period.
