Getting Around In Old Town

New signs point the way.

Travelers on King Street will find it easier to locate places of interest as the city installs new interim directional signs this week. The “way finding” signs are going up just in time for the city’s art festival, scheduled for Sept. 13 and 14.

“The signs will be placed along King Street from the King Street Metro to the waterfront and are meant to help people locate places that they want to see,” said Barbara Gordon, a spokesperson for the city.

There will be about 40 signs and they will be placed two per block, on alternating sides of King Street. Most are 18 by 24 inches with the grid maps of Old Town being slightly larger — 24x24. The signs are blue with white lettering.

“A 1998 Metro study said that we needed to do a better job with directional signs in Old Town,” said Richard Baier, the city’s director of Transportation and Environmental Services. “This project has been an interdepartmental effort and these signs are only interim. We are all working together to design permanent signage.”
