Long & Foster Real Estate Inc. sponsors the Long & Foster Scholarship Program, awarding $1,000 to each of 200 recipients for the 2005-06 academic year. The monetary scholarship award will be made payable directly to the college or university in the student's name. The deadline for applying is March 1, and the scholarships will be awarded in the beginning of April 2005. Eligible high school seniors must have at least a 3.0 GPA on a 4.0 scale, demonstrate leadership and financial need, indicate positions of leadership and list all school groups and/or community organizations in which they have served or been involved, and any part-time job held while in school. Applications can be obtained at www.longandfoster.com/scholarship or from high school guidance counselors.

The Vienna Woman’s Club offers two college scholarships for rising college freshmen living within the Vienna zip codes 22180-22183:

* The Joanne Craig Cook Memorial Scholarship, a $4,000 scholarship for a student pursuing a degree in education. This one-time scholarship has been donated by the Cook Family in her memory.

* A $1,000 annual scholarship presented by the Vienna Woman’s Club. These scholarships are awarded in May, and applications are available in the career centers of James Madison, Oakton, George Marshall, Thomas Jefferson, Paul VI and Flint Hill High Schools. Stephen Surbey of James Madison High School has recently been selected to participate in the Fairfax County Youth Leadership Program. Established by the county’s Department of Management and Budget, participants learn about public policy issues through seminars and a three-week internship with a county agency.

Svetlona Macarov and Larissa Flores of George C. Marshall High School have recently been selected to participate in the Fairfax County Youth Leadership Program. Katie Schelhorn and Eliot Toy of Oakton High School have recently been selected to participate in the Fairfax County Youth Leadership Program. Established by the county’s Department of Management and Budget, participants learn about public policy issues through seminars and a three-week internship with a county agency.
