Volunteers Needed
Area churches of all denominations are preparing to for the annual Holiday Baskets programs through LINK — a non-profit organization made up of 16 churches. Through this program groceries, food gift certificates, used coats and toys are supplied to more than 4,000 needy men, women and children the week before Thanksgiving and Christmas. This year's events will take place Nov. 19 and Dec. 17 in Sterling and Herndon. Event organizers are currently seeking non-perishable food items, $10-$25 food gift certificates, new unwrapped toys for children of all ages and clean used coats to be provided to the families in need at the upcoming events.
Because more than 2,000 people are expected at each location, volunteers are needed to set up the week before the event, walk families through the church basements during the events and help clean up once the last family has gone home. Spanish-speaking volunteers are also needed. Food distribution events will be held at Christ the Redeemer Catholic Church in Sterling and Trinity Presbyterian Church in Herndon from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Sterling United Methodist Church will distribute winter coats Nov. 19 from 4 to 9 p.m. and Herndon United Methodist Church will distribute toys and gifts Dec. 17 from 4 to 9 p.m. Donations of non-perishable food can be dropped off at Christ the Redeemer Catholic Church, 46833 Harry Byrd Highway (Route 7) in Sterling and Trinity Presbyterian, 651 Dranesville Road in Herndon. To find out drop off times or to sign up to volunteer for one to two hours or all day, call (703) 437-1776, or on-line at www.linkagainsthunger.org.

The defendants, all of Herndon, ranged from 15 to 17 years old. The youths are charged with 17 counts of destruction of property, which carries a penalty of confinement in jail for up to 12 months, or a fine up to $2,500 or both.
