His Niagara team may have lost its past seven games, but that hasn’t meant that freshman Brian Deering hasn’t been playing well.
In 13-3 loss to Youngstown State on April 15, freshman Brian Deering, a former player at West Springfield, collected a pair of singles — the only Niagara player to record two hits on the afternoon. The Purple Eagles managed just five hits in the loss.
Meanwhile, the third baseman hit in the No. 2 slot, and has started three games. In 16 at-bats, Deering has five hits, a solid .313 batting average and has been walked four times. In the field, he has yet to commit an error.
Niagara opened with season with series wins at Davidson, Copping State, but lost to Wofford and split the University of Cincinnati. Last season under second-year head coach Chris Chernisky, Niagara went 15-32 overall, and just 3-21 in the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference Tournament.
The Purple Eagles had a midweek tilt with Cleveland State on Wednesday afternoon, and host a two-game set with Saint Peter’s beginning on Saturday.
