Langley High School received eight nominations for this year’s Cappies, including five for their performance of "The Crucible" earlier this year. They will perform a three-minute excerpt of the play at this year’s gala, to be held June 10 at the Kennedy Center.

The McLean Citizens Association hosted their annual members meeting Wednesday, May 23, saying farewell to President Rob Jackson and welcoming new president Sally Horn. Jackson, who is wrapping up his fifth term (the most of any MCA president), said he was proud of the MCA’s work on a number of issues over the past five years.

Saxons go on to defeat Chantilly in finals.

The Langley Saxons defeated the Oakton Cougars in a Northern Region boys’ lacrosse semifinals playoff game last Thursday, May 24. As a result, the Saxons booked their passage to the Northern Region boys’ finals the following day (Friday, May 25 versus Chantilly) and also earned an automatic seeding for the upcoming Virginia High School League (VHSL) state playoffs for the fourth year running.

Rams Defeat Westfield in Rainy Concorde Title Game

Robinson baseball builds 3-0 lead before weather delay; Go on to 4-2 title game victory.

Both the Westfield and Robinson baseball teams, along with competing against one another in Tuesday night’s Concorde District tournament baseball championship game, had to deal with sloppy, rainy weather conditions as well. Ultimately, following a third inning delay due to rain, the Rams of Robinson came away with a 4-2 finals win.

South Lakes Baseball Wraps Up Spring Season

Seahawks edge Fairfax in play-in game before season-ending loss at Marshall.

Although it took more than 24 hours, the South Lakes Seahawks baseball team ultimately subdued the Fairfax Rebels to win their opening Liberty District Tournament game, 8-7. The first three innings were played on Tuesday, May 15 with Seahawk senior pitcher Billy McLaughlin opening on the mound. In the top of the second inning, South Lakes' designated hitter Bobby Rae Allen singled to left field and Austin Gibbons parked a home run into the trees beyond the fence for a 2-0 advantage for the Seahawks.

The Madison Warhawks' girls softball team fell behind early to the McLean Highlanders in a semifinals game of the Liberty District Tournament last Friday evening before rallying late to claim a 7-3 victory.

The long term season plan for the Herndon High boys' soccer team was to ultimately be playing its best by the postseason. The Hornets could not have fulfilled that mission any more successfully than they did at last week's Concorde District tournament where, as the No. 3-seed, they won all three of their games to capture the title.

Making the World a Better Place

Daisy Troop 3113 members at Virginia Run Elementary School has been working all year to earn 10 petals for their uniform which teaches them the Girl Scout law. This week the troop members earned their final petal — the pink petal which represents "Make the world a better place.” To make the world a better place, the girls planted pink, white and yellow flowers in the flower bed under the sign at Virginia Run Elementary School. One of the parents, Russel Ramey, edged the flower bed, cleared it of weeds and mulched it in preparation for the day. From left are Caroline Johnson, Eloise Latimer, Emily Bobek, Grace Ramey, Allison Nguyen, Sarah Van Buren, Ava Lawless and Ginny Fitch.

Good Citizens Essay Award

The Lane's Mill Chapter, Daughters of the American Revolution selected Centreville High School senior Kevin Chow as the recipient of the chapter's DAR Good Citizens Essay Award. And the Office of Human Rights and Equity Programs (OHREP), the agency that enforces fair housing laws in the county, is shining a spotlight on the problem through seminars for housing providers, Realtors, community groups and other interested parties.
