My wife, Diane, and I were just about to go out for dinner at about 5:30 p.m. on Thursday, May 3, and we were giving the boys some last-minute instructions. She and Liam, 12, were at the computer in the living room in front of the house and she heard what sounded like a car accident.
Marshall High Students Win DECA Competition
A three-student team from Marshall High School won first place at the DECA International Career Development Conference held last week in Salt Lake City. Annie Greenwood, Art Kapplow, and Ali Skahan took top honors for their Entrepreneurship Promotion Plan. Marshall High School is a Fairfax County public school.

Red Dowdell’s fifth-inning RBI triple tied the score at 1-all and his seventh-inning double off the center-field fence plated the winning run as the Yorktown baseball team defeated Hayfield 3-2 at Greenbrier Park.

Longfellow’s Science Olympians Win State Championship
Longfellow Middle School is celebrating its Science Olympiad team’s recent victory in the Virginia state championship. This year’s state tournament featured 29 schools, including local rival Kilmer MS, which had narrowly defeated Longfellow last year. This time, Longfellow pulled well clear of the competition with an outstanding performance: team members won the gold medal in 12 of the tournament’s 23 events, and placed second or third in 8 other events.

Outdoor and nature enthusiasts of all ages flocked to the Walker Nature Education Center Saturday, May 5 for the annual Spring Festival. Stations were scattered around the center and the adjacent paths allowing children to participate in a variety of natural activities, including stream monitoring, plant identification and fishing in nearby Lake Audubon.
