Column: Balancing the Budget

Adjourning a 60-day legislative session without approving a biennial budget may seem like Washington-style failure to some, but to those who work closely with the process taking more time to balance the budget reflects the realities and limitations of the tremendous task involved. Contrasted to federal budget-making, there are no continuing resolutions or the ability to print or borrow money.

Reston Interfaith, a nonprofit dedicated to providing affordable housing and supportive social services to individuals and families in need, has been named a finalist for the 2012 Helios Apollo Awards, the premier awards program for recognizing employers in the Washington metropolitan region that invest in employee development initiatives that make an impact. Reston Interfaith is one of six finalists in the Tria award category, which represents companies with 101-175 employees.

Vienna Choral Society drew more than 500 guests to four hours of Celtic inspiration.

If the crowds were a indication – and they usually are – the premiere Celtic Arts Festival on March 17 hosted by the Vienna Choral Society [VCS] at Vienna Elementary School was a smash hit. Throughout the four-hour program on St. Patrick’s Day, more than 500 guests listened to music on two stages, ate Cornish pasties sold by The Pure Pasty Company, and browsed through vendors’ stalls.

Priya Krishnan, a McLean resident and a senior at the Thomas Jefferson High School for Science and Technology has been selected as the 2012 AXA/US News Achievement Scholar for the state of Virginia. Krishnan will receive $10,000 scholarship to college and join 51 other exceptional students from around the country in receiving this honor.
