A man who entered the country illegally, raped an 8-year-old Centreville girl and then fled the state was sentenced last week to 25 years in prison. He is 30-year-old Salvador Portillo-Saravia.

Since 1960, the Fairfax Salvation Army has provided residents with utility and rent assistance, food, clothing and furniture on an emergency basis. It also provides toys and bicycles to needy children during the Christmas holidays. In 2011, it assisted 1,250 families.

The Virginia General Assembly's web site Lis.virginia.gov is very valuable for determining what your state delegate and senator is doing to represent you because it has information readily available on legislation introduced (patron) and signed on other bills (co patron) by each state delegate and senator, committee assignments, bills considered by committees and votes cast by each General Assembly member in committees, during house and senate floor sessions and whether to pass or reject bills. The patron of a bill has the responsibility of providing data to committees for consideration to pass or reject a bill. When a person co-patrons a bill it shows support for the bill's content.
Seminary Chapel Campaign Raises $10.8 Million

Allowed to start a 100-yard dash at the 80-yard mark confers a mighty advantage on the racer. So it is with the Virginia Theological Seminary. The public — and final — phase of the Seminary's "Chapel for the Ages" campaign is beginning. Of the $13.0 million needed, $10.8 million has been raised.

ASF, Hammond students team up to build guitars.
Twelve Hammond Middle School students stood before their teachers, classmates, School Board members and administrators Feb. 1 as they gave a musical performance using their own hand-crafted cigar box guitars. As a result of an after-school program sponsored by Alexandria City Public Schools and the Alexandria Court Services Unit, several middle school youth proudly displayed the culmination of four months of work building their instruments.
