Credit last year’s 5th grade class at Dranesville Elementary for getting the school involved in International Walk to School Day. “The 5th graders and their teachers were Internet searching for healthy activities as part of their science and health classes,” said Principal Kathryn Manoatl, “and they came across this global action campaign. It called for an international day of walking to school. Seemed like a perfect match. The focus was on school kids and what could be easier than walking?”

Motivating Girls for Math and Science

McLean Area AAUW is hosting a program on Oct. 23, 7 p.m. at the McLean Community Center (1234 Ingleside Ave.) on How We Can Make a Difference in Local Girls’ Education and Future Careers. Fairfax County leaders in the areas of STEM, GEMS and MAGiC are the featured speakers. These acronyms all relate to efforts designed to motivate girls to pursue science, technology, engineering and math—the four areas that are referred to collectively as STEM.

Churchill Road Named Green Flag School

Eco-Schools program gives school highest award.

Churchill Road Elementary School became just the eighth school in the country to earn the Eco-Schools USA Green Flag award Friday, Oct. 7. The Eco-Schools program is hosted by the National Wildlife Federation, and there are more than 50 eco schools in the County, along with two other Green Flag schools in the state, the highest award level.

Promoting Clean Water at Forestville Elementary

Forestville Elementary School and the Forestville PTA hosted the Wyland Foundation's Clean Water Learning Center last week in Great Falls. The 1,000-foot mobile classroom featured science exhibits, computer models and running rivers.
