Great Falls Troop 1991 Bronze Recipients
Great Falls Junior Girl Scout Troop 1991 members Isabelle Saba, Nicole Haley, Eliza Pastore, Ale Van Scoyoc, Julianna Grimson and Jacqueline Grimson received the Bronze Award at a ceremony on May 24 at Christ the King Church in Great Falls. The Bronze Award is the highest award in Junior Girl Scouts.

Sweet Filling For Empty Bowls
McLean community picks up bowls for fundraiser.
Members of the McLean High School community returned to the school Thursday, May 31 to pick up hundreds of bowls they made last March and to help raise funds to combat worldwide hunger. On March 1, students, families and school staff came to make bowls out of one-pound lumps of clay, and after months of work from the school’s ceramics students, those bowls and more were available for a donation to Stop Hunger Now.
Aplin Named National Merit Scholar
Kathryn Gareth Gorsuch Aplin, a T.C. Williams High School senior who plans to major in engineering in college, is one of 18 Virginia students and more than 2,500 students nationally to receive a National Merit Scholarship financed by a U.S. college or university.
Best in the World In Weird Science
A team of 7 fifth-graders from Stratford Landing Elementary School recently competed at the Odyssey of the World Finals at Iowa State University. The team came in first place for its solution to the NASA-sponsored "Weird Science" problem and came in third place overall. The team, coached by Terri Bell, includes team members Mary Bell, Lukas Brokamp, Nick Greve, Lindsay Johnson, Jenna Mulvihill, Lily Penn and Rhys Shallbetter. More 800 teams from 15 countries participated in this international competition. The team would like to thank the Stratford Landing school community for its support and the many people whose donations made this possible. Special thanks go to the sponsors who donated $500 or more: the Mount Vernon Kiwanis Club, WOW Cafe and Wingery and the Stratford Landing PTA.
Crackers Helps with Learning
Woodley Hills Elementary School incorporated a rabbit named Crackers into its curriculum this year. The rabbit is used to reinforce the school's values including hard working, trustworthiness, responsibility and caring. Susan Carlson is the Woodley Hills teacher responsible for Crackers. The children learned about voting as they participated in a contest to choose Crackers' name, each child writing an essay supporting their proposed name. The children learned about rabbits and are allowed to feed him with supervision. The school's Daisy Troop earned a badge by planting a garden filled with foods appropriate for Crackers.
‘Now & Then, 50 Years of Hits, 1962-2012’
The West Potomac High School Choral Groups will be presenting their annual Spring Show in Springbank Auditorium at West Potomac High School on May 31, June 1 and June 2. State PTA Volunteer of the Year
Del. Tim Hugo attended the April PTA meeting at Union Mill Elementary to present Kate Trussell with a proclamation from Gov. Bob McDonnell recognizing her as the Virginia PTA volunteer of the year. Hugo commended Trussell for coordinating our Bread Basket program that made over 11,000 sandwiches for Food for Others last year. As of this year, students at Union Mill have already made almost 13,000 sandwiches for Food for Others. Above, with Trussell are her husband, Jeff, and daughter, Sarah.

On Monday, May 21, over 100 students and alumni of West Springfield High School joined to protest Fairfax County Public School's staffing policies in the fine arts and celebrate the impact the fine arts has had on their lives.

Heights School Men’s Chorus Releases CD
Ensemble recorded the music at St. Peter’s Church in Vienna.
The Heights School Men’s Chorus released its latest CD earlier this month. Their recording, “Sing dem Herrn” (Sing to the Lord), is a collection of traditional men’s choral music performed a cappella.

Signature Projects created by second year Fairfax Academy students will be featured at Fairfax Academy’s annual Creative Works Showcase on Tuesday, June 5, 6:30-7:45 p.m. at the Fairfax HS Commons, followed by the Awards Program, 8 p.m. at the Fairfax HS Auditorium.
Fairfax Resident Earns Girl Scout Gold Award
Eleni Antzoulatos of Troop 5462 in Fairfax, was one of 221 Girl Scouts from the Girl Scout Council of the Nation’s Capital (GSCNC) recently recognized for earning the highest award in Girl Scouting. The annual ceremony, called "In Your Honor" was held at Trinity Washington University and celebrated the accomplishments of young women in the region that reached this extraordinary summit.
