Art Teachers Display Their Work
Centreville High art teachers Allison Dreon, Troy Hayes, Kris Killinger, Rory Marcaccio Schaffer and Pam Young will display their works as Artists of the Month at La Bella Luce in the Town of Clifton. The shop is at 7137 Main St., and their show is titled, “Gli Insegnanti d’arte” (Italian for “the art teachers”). Store hours are Wednesday-Friday, 11 a.m.-5 p.m.; Saturday, noon-6 p.m.; Sunday, noon-4 p.m.; and by appointment. The teachers’ work will be on display at La Bella Luce through June and is also for sale. Killinger and Young are bringing their oil paintings; Killinger paints flowers and still lifes, and Young does Tuscan still lifes and landscapes. Dreon will show examples of her photography, Schaffer will offer her digital photography, and Hayes is displaying his portraits of athletes done in pastels.
At Virginia International Music Festival
Westfield High's Concert, Symphonic and Wind Symphony bands plus the Marching Bulldogs participated in the Virginia International Music Festival in Norfolk, April 27 and 28. It featured bands from as far away as Minnesota and International Bands from Belgium, Norway, Albania, plus military bands from each of the Armed Forces. The results from the International Music Festival: Jazz Band, Gold Medal, First Place Division III, Outstanding Solist Andrew Harrington; Concert Band, Gold Medal, Second Place Division I; Symphonic Band, Gold Medal, First Place in Division II; Wind Symphony, Gold Medal, Outstanding Soloist Justin Carpenter, First Place Division II; Marching Band, International Parade of Nations, Gold Medal, Best Music, Best Marching. The four Gold Medals earned by WHS were 4 of the 6 Gold Medals given for the entire weekend of competition. Additional recognition included Grand Champion Jazz Band, Grand Champion Concert Band and Grand Champion Parade of Nations.

Students Write about Chantilly
Sultan Seraj from Chantilly High School and Rachael Hayes from Poplar Tree Elementary School won the Chantilly Day essay competition. The topic of the essay was: “Remember Yesterday, Celebrate Today, Embrace Tomorrow.”
50 Years of Hits
The West Potomac High School Choral Groups will be presenting their annual spring show “Now & Then, 50 Years of Hits! 1962-2012” in Springbank Auditorium at West Potomac High School on May 31, June 1 and June 2. All shows will begin at 7 p.m. Tickets are $10 in advance or $12 at the door. Online tickets are available this year at www.westpotomacchoirs.org. The fully choreographed show features all students in the West Potomac choral program, along with special guests — students from the Carl Sandburg Middle School and the theater comedy sports improvisational team, with assistance from Philip Clarke, West Potomac drama director. South County Secondary students in Janet Dower’s middle school English for Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL) classes learned a big lesson about communication, when they wrote a letter to President Obama and received a response from him.

Victoria McCaffrey, seventh grade student at St. Charles School in Arlington, is this year's top awardee in Virginia's American Legion essay contest. The first place certificate is accompanied by a prize of $250.

Fairfax Student to Receive Eagle Scout Rank
On June 2, David Luftglass, a junior at W. T. Woodson High School, will receive his Eagle Scout rank at a Court of Honor ceremony with Boy Scout Troop 1533 and community leaders, at Providence Presbyterian Church, 9019 Little River Turnpike in Fairfax.
Woodson, Fairfax Shows Receive Cappie Nods
Both Woodson and Fairfax High have received Cappie nominations for their spring, theatrical productions. The winners will be revealed during the June 10 Cappies Gala at The Kennedy Center.
Spotlight on High-School Theater
Paul VI receives nine Cappie nominations.
The Cappie nominations for outstanding high-school theater were just announced and, all together, Robinson, Woodson, Paul VI and Fairfax received 29 nominations. The awards to the winners will be presented Sunday, June 10, at the annual Cappies Gala at The Kennedy Center in Washington, D.C.

In November 2011, Robinson Secondary had the honor of performing the world premiere of an original play, Ken Ludwig’s "Midsummer/Jersey." And now, that play has received 10 Cappie nominations for excellence in high-school theater.
LBSS Odyssey of the Mind Team Competes at World Level
The Lake Braddock Secondary School Odyssey of the Mind team has won the right to compete at the World Level Competition to be held at Iowa State University May 22-26. International and U.S. teams progress to the World Level after rigorous competition at the regional and state levels. Team members are CheyAnne Rivera, Crystal Luong, Rusty Ford, Noah Woodruff, Nick Wilcher, Nan Denette and Ryan Ford.
Cub Scouts Promoted to the Next Rank
On Sunday, May 20, Cub Scout Pack 1345 held their annual Advancement Ceremony at the Ponds Community Center. The Pack, chartered by Burke Center Conservancy, recognized the accomplishments of 42 scouts whose achievements during the year earned them advancement to the next cub scout rank. The pack also welcomed three new scouts that will form the next den of Tiger Cubs this fall.
