Springfield Resident Receives Literary Merit Award
The Lord Botetourt Medal, established in 1772 "for the honor and encouragement of literary merit," is presented to a graduating senior who has "attained the greatest distinction in scholarship." Rebecca Koenig, of Springfield, received this award on Sunday, May 13 at the College of William & Mary’s Commencement ceremony.

Art Teachers’ Work on Display
Centreville High art teachers will display their works as Artists of the Month at La Bella Luce in the Town of Clifton. The shop is at 7137 Main St., and their show is titled, "Gli Insegnanti d’arte" (Italian for "the art teachers").
Oak View Elementary Bikes to School
On May 9, Oak View Elementary School held their Bike to School event. The Principal, Bonnie Glazewski, rode six miles to school and back, joining students along the way on the identified route. Approximately 50 students participated; coordinated by OV parents.

School Named for Flora Singer
Teacher, holocaust survivor, author, Potomac resident died in 2009.
The Montgomery Board of Education will name a public elementary school after the late Flora M. Singer, a Holocaust survivor, Potomac resident and former teacher at Cabin John Middle and Winston Churchill, Albert Einstein and Walt Whitman high schools.
Green Hedges Students Win National Spanish Exam Medals
Several Spanish students from Green Hedges School in Vienna attained national recognition for excellent performance in the 2012 National Spanish Examinations. Students from Green Hedges School earned one gold and two silver medals.

Rachel VanPelt, family and consumer sciences teacher at Madison High, has been recognized by the Virginia Family, Career, and Community Leaders of America (FCCLA) Alumni and Associates organization with its Connie S. Rhoton Alumni and Associates Achievement Award for outstanding support of and involvement in the state organization.

The Brainy Bunch Wins Research Award
Vienna students impress judges at the World Invitational Open.
The Brainy Bunch First Lego League (FLL) team, which includes six 8th grade Kilmer Middle School students, won 2nd Place overall in the Research category at the FLL World Invitational Open hosted by the University of South Florida and Legoland on May 3-6. The Brainy Bunch earned the honor of representing Virginia and D.C. at the World Festival by winning the 1st place overall Grand Champion Award at the VA/DC State tournament in December.
Landon Hosts Azalea Garden Festival
Over the course of a weekend, guests at the 59th Annual Azalea Garden Festival at Landon School were invited to take part in a variety of events including shopping at the specialty boutiques, touring the "of Landon, by Landon" art exhibit, and viewing the musical performances on Miniter Quad.
Tiger Trot for Health
