Arlington Snapshot: Donating 500 Books

The women of Pi Beta Phi Fraternity for Women partnered with The Reading Connection and the Arlington Partnership for Affordable Housing to host a celebration in honor of Dr. Seuss’ birthday and present The Reading Connection with 500 books donated from Pi Beta Phi. On Feb. 29, the children at the Columbia Grove apartments enjoyed being read to by members of Pi Beta Phi as well as receiving temporary tattoos, stickers, and a certificate of participation. At the end of the party, a cake was served to all who attended and each child went home with a new book for their own home library. The Reading Connection will distribute the remaining books donated from Pi Beta Phi at other literacy events they hold regularly at 13 read aloud sites throughout the metro D.C. area.

Chick-Fil-A’s Peter Kim (left) receives a plaque from police 1st Lt. Matt Owens. The restaurant was honored during the Feb. 10 meeting of the Sully District Station’s Citizens Advisory Committee. Owens, the assistant station commander, said Chick-Fil-A donated food to the police officers working on New Year’s Eve and has partnered with the station on various community projects. The plaque recognized Chick-Fil-A for its “continued, outstanding support and dedication to the men and women of the Sully District Police Station.”

Mount Vernon Snapshot: Puller Institute Students

On Feb. 14, six students — Ryan Huck, Audrey Wilson, David Williamson, Margarita Aleixo, Thomas Wetzel, and Krista Worthington — from West Potomac High School and Mountain View High School in Stafford County travelled to Richmond for the first annual Puller Institute and met with Gov. Terry McAuliffe. The Puller Institute, named in honor of retired state Sen. Linda “Toddy” Puller, is designed to give students the opportunity to experience state government on a first hand basis, develop interest in public policy and leadership in their community.

Mount Vernon Snapshot: Day of Dental Service

The dentists and supporting staff at Mt. Vernon Center for Dentistry devoted a day of work on Saturday, Feb. 20 to provide emergency dental services at their office for clients of United Community Ministries (UCM). Services valued at more than $10,000 were donated that day to alleviate the pain of 19 clients suffering with serious dental problems and who lack health insurance.
