Seniors Receive Sunday Dinner

Meal on Wheels aims for regular Sunday delivery by October.

Sunday, June 3, was Service Sunday for the Old Presbyterian Meeting House (OPMH) and a major milestone for Alexandria’s Meals on Wheels program. OPMH volunteers delivered the first-ever Sunday meals to seniors enrolled in the program, the result of a unique community partnership led by Senior Services of Alexandria (SSA).

Four Alexandria City Boy Scouts received their Eagle Scout Award, Boy Scout’s highest honor, in a ceremony on June 2 at Westminster Presbyterian Church, Alexandria.

Obituary: Barbara Newell Cornwell

Barbara Newell Cornwell, affectionately nicknamed "Susan" or "Sue", died peacefully on May 28, 2012 at the age of 92. Sue was the daughter of Wendel R. and Mariquita K. McKenzie, born in Kernville, CA on November 11, 1919.

The T.C. Williams High School baseball program played host to the inaugural Titans Alumni Baseball Game June 2 when a total of 36 players reunited with old friends and played a seven-inning game before a sellout crowd at Eugene Simpson Field in Alexandria.

Hayden Arp didn’t always love music. However, in seventh grade he discovered Garage Band on his computer and began exploring with it. Soon, he found a passion for music that exists to this day.

West Springfield’s teacher Brian Heintz honored at state level, competes nationally.

Brian Heintz, a teacher at West Springfield High, recently won the Virginia State History teacher of the year award. Heintz has taught history and social studies in the Fairfax County Public School system for nine years, at both Westfield and West Springfield

Springfield’s ‘Signature Race’

5k/15k races are among the most popular events at Springfield Days.

This year marked the third annual race at Springfield Days and had by far the largest turnout the event has ever seen. "Several years back we decided that we needed a signature race for the people of Springfield to call their own, and it just keeps getting better and better every year," said Mark Russell of Springfield, the race coordinator.

Author, Senior Columnist, Radio Commentator to Speak at RWC Meeting

The Republican Women of Clifton (RWC) will feature Dr. Ileana Johnson speaking about and signing her recently published book Freedom on Life Support at its June 18 meeting. The event will be at the Centreville High School Media Center. Members and guests are invited to the social hour that will begin at 7 p.m. when refreshments will be served.

Fridy Named Volunteer of the Year

Giving the community an event they can be proud of.

Each year the Board of Directors for Celebrate Fairfax, Inc. honor one outstanding volunteer worker with the Volunteer of the Year Award. This year’s recipient, Scott Fridy (Chantilly), has been volunteering in Fairfax County for nearly 20 years and he helps coordinate the reveled "Children's Avenue" sponsored by ExxonMobil.

FACETS’ Amanda Andere Named Northern Virginian of the Year by Northern Virginia Magazine

Leadership around preventing and ending homelessness cited.

Amanda Andere, the executive director of FACETS, a nonprofit that opens doors by helping parents, their children, and individuals who suffer the effects of poverty in Fairfax County, was selected by Northern Virginia Magazine as a 2012 Northern Virginian of the Year for her outstanding leadership that is helping FACETS grow its efforts to end homelessness as well as her community commitment.

Seven Springfield women recognized for service in "Forgotten War."

Libby Haynes was in the middle of her freshman year of high school at George Washington in Alexandria when the Japanese Navy bombed the United States naval base at Pearl Harbor on Dec. 7, 1941. Nearly 2,500 Americans were killed in the surprise attack.

Born in Bolivia, Lucia Maldonado came to the U.S. at age 7 with her mother and younger sister. Now 18, she’s about to graduate from Robinson Secondary School and is the recipient of a Hispanic Leadership Alliance (HLA) scholarship.

Planning for the Future

Robinson’s Latin American Student Association is growing.

To encourage leadership among Robinson Secondary School’s Hispanic population, Ruth Azimi and Enrique Fernandez co-sponsor LASA, the Latin American Students Association. It’s helping the students’ parents, as well.
