It was only fitting on a snowy Sunday in late March, following a winter filled with snow days, that members of the Burke Historical Society celebrate the beginning of spring by learning about the eventful Knickerbocker Snowstorm of 1922.

Students and professional artists exhibit creativity at Spring Art Fair

Forestville Elementary was turned into an art museum last week. The school’s Parent Teacher Association held it’s Spring Art Fair on Thursday, displaying works by about 70 student artists and professionals from Great Falls Studios. “We do this every two to three years,” said event organizer and PTA member Maureen Gatti. “The artists have really appreciated being here for the children and the children like meeting the professional artists.” In the cafeteria, dance performances to popular songs like “In Summer” from the movie Frozen, even got the children in the audience dancing. Proud parents took pictures of their children on stage or in front of their art display. Fifth grade student Cassie Dallas, 11, said her love of oil painting began after she saw an artist painting at her local farmers market. Her parents sent her to lessons, and she gets to paint for one to two hours with her instructor every week.

A mock debate over cell phone privacy and the law drew hundreds of students, parents and even some very distinguished guests to Langley High School’s library last week. Langley High’s 22nd annual Case Day explored Riley vs. California on April 8, a case on the Supreme Court’s current docket that allowed students to debate whether a cell phone - which holds a wealth of personal information - can be searched without a warrant.

Vienna Writer Wins ‘A Gift’

"Chris Stezin (Vienna) is, hands down, one of First Draft's biggest crowd pleasers," said Leslie Kobylinski (McLean), First Draft artistic director. "He's a prodigious writer who continues to be inventive and original. Just when you think you know his writing style, he'll surprise you.” First Draft is a professional nonprofit theater company dedicated to developing new plays and enlivening audiences with free play readings in Arlington and D.C. The free readings provide immediate audience feedback to playwrights to enhance their fresh, new works. In announcing Stezin's appointment as writer-in-residence Kobylinski noted that "our audiences love what he has to say...I get the most enthusiast emails after a Chris Stezin play."

Letter: Alexandria Isn’t Arlington or D.C.

To the Editor: Something smells very rotten indeed in the process regarding the proposals for food trucks in our city. The panel who toiled long and hard and the concerned citizens who attended those meetings have been completely disregarded. The panel was not even allowed to issue a final report after eight months of meetings. Worse, city staff reported that many issues were decided unanimously by the panel — totally false! What is the rush in bringing this type of trade to our city? One can only assume that this is being driven by city staff as the final proposal is nearly identical to what was first proposed. This entire process makes a mockery of civic engagement and I fear what that impression holds for our future.

Torpedo Factory Welcomes Guest Artists for Summer 2012

The Torpedo Factory Art Center announces the Visiting Artists who will be in residence during June, July and August 2012. Now in its third year, the goal of the Visiting Artist Program is to expose the Torpedo Factory Art Center’s visitors and patrons to a rotating group of accomplished artists and provide a unique opportunity to interact, explore and exchange ideas. The Visiting Artists will be working in studios throughout the 76,000-square-foot art center and will be actively involved in art enrichment events throughout the summer months in which they will demonstrate and discuss their work.
