Janet Rae O'Dell, of Great Falls, passed away on March 13, 2012 from acute lymphoblastic leukemia. Born and raised in St. Louis, Mo., she moved to the Washington area in 1972.

Angry Birds Rumored to Appear at Burke Centre Festival

... but not in the wine tent, please.

The word around the neighborhood is that Angry Birds are preening to make an appearance at the Burke Centre Festival, with sidekicks Spongebob and Elmo, too. They’ll be at home in the whimsy and sport that is the Burke Centre Festival, at 6060 Burke Centre Parkway, 10 a.m.-5 p.m. Saturday and 11 a.m.-5 p.m. Sunday. They might not be at the wine garden though (5-10 p.m. Saturday only). But everywhere else? Fair game.

Forest Edge in World Finals

Fifth graders compete at Odyssey of the Mind World Finals.

A team of fifth grade students from Forest Edge Elementary School won first place in the state Odyssey of the Mind competition on Saturday, April 13, and these students will compete in Odyssey of the Mind World finals to be held next month (May 22-25) at Michigan State University, Lansing.

Forestville Elementary School Honors WWII Veterans

Last May a flame was lit for a very special undertaking when the students at Forestville Elementary attended a showing of "Honor Flight," a documentary based on the lives of four WWII Wisconsin veterans and their trip to see the memorial built in their honor.

‘Avenue Q: School Edition’ Opens Thursday at West Potomac

Beyond the Page Theatre Company of West Potomac High School takes the stage Thursday, Nov. 7 at 7 p.m. for the first of five performances of “Avenue Q: School Edition.”

Letter: Campaign Based on Divisive Issues

As I look at the staged demonstrations that were organized before the now cancelled debate in Great Falls was clear that first, they were closely coordinated by Kathleen Murphy’s team; (one of the key organizers held Ms. Murphy’s kickoff), and second, that they were organized because Murphy does not want to debate all of the issues we have before our communities—she just wants to discuss her divisive social issues she’s based her whole campaign upon.
