All Fairfax County fire stations will hold Fire Prevention Open Houses this Saturday, Oct. 12, from 10 a.m.-4 p.m., and the public is welcome. It’s part of national Fire Prevention Week and is aimed at preventing home fires—especially those that begin in the kitchen.

Parkway Overpass Now Open

As of Thursday, Nov. 15, VDOT shifted traffic onto the new Fairfax County Parkway bridge over the Fair Lakes Parkway and Monument Drive. The new bridge spans from south of Fair Lakes Parkway to north of Monument Drive. With the new overpass, motorists won’t encounter a traffic signal for the five-mile stretch between Popes Head Road and Route 50. The work is part of a $69.7 million interchange project set for completion next spring. It’s being built to ease traffic congestion at the intersection of these two, heavily traveled thoroughfares.

Three-year-old black Labrador retriever Bailey was abandoned in Hughesville, Md., while pregnant. The good news was that she was soon to become the one-thousandth dog rescued this year by Lab Rescue of the Labrador Retriever Club of the Potomac.

Burke and Fairfax: New Bike Lanes Proposed for 7 Braddock District Roadways

New bicycle lanes are being proposed for Ravensworth Road, Coffer Woods Road, Burke Road, Patriot Drive, Guinea Road, Queensberry Avenue and Heritage Drive in Braddock District. The improvements would come as part of the Virginia Department of Transportation 2016 summer road repaving program.

McLean Seniors Have Strong Showing At Nationals

McLean residents Sidney Levingston and Tammy Vo were part of a Potomac School team that placed 24th in U.S. Open Robotics Championship in Omaha, Neb., a strong showing in a field of 80 teams nationwide. Levingston and Vo, along with fellow seniors Sarah Chiang and Amy Zhang, made up one of four teams that qualified for the championship from Potomac. They will go on to compete in the World Championship at the end of April in Anaheim, Calif., along with another team of eighth graders that won the Virginia VEX IQ state championship in February. Currently in its fifth season, Potomac’s robotics program has fielded teams that have won three national VEX championships. Last year, each of Potomac’s seven teams finished among the world’s top 100 teams.

Officer Involved in Shooting Cleared

On Tuesday, Jan. 21, Fairfax County Commonwealth’s Attorney Raymond F. Morrogh has informed Colonel Edwin C. Roessler Jr., chief of the Fairfax County Police Department, that he finds no basis for criminal liability on the part of the officer who discharged his weapon in the fatal shooting of James Bryant on Oct. 30, 2013 at 9155 Richmond Highway.
