Motorcyclist Dies in Clifton Crash Thomas V. Bowers, 25, of Burke, died Tuesday, July 2, from injuries he sustained in a June 16 crash. The accident occurred at Clifton Road and Maple Branch Road. Fairfax County police officers were called to the scene that day around 2 p.m.
NOVA Labs Sponsors ‘Take-apart’ Day
NOVA Labs threw open its doors on Saturday, May 11, to host a “Take-Apart” day, for the Girls Excelling in Math and Science (GEMS) Club from Langston Hughes Middle School in Reston. Fairfax County police have charged a Lorton man with two sexual offenses. He is Tabbasum H. Gilani, 29, of 7965 Almeda Court. On Saturday, June 8, at 4 p.m., officers were called to 6364 Springfield Plaza to speak with a 23-year-old woman who reported that she’d been sexually assaulted.

As chilly—and drizzly—as it was, the weather did not deter thousands of local families to line Maple Avenue on Wednesday, Oct. 23 to celebrate the 67th annual Vienna Halloween Parade. Hosted for the first time ever as a partnership between the Town of Vienna and the year-old Vienna Business Association [VBA], the parade featured Vienna Mayor M. Jane Seeman as its Grand Marshal in 2013. New this year was a concert presented on the Town Green by the School of Rock as an early evening prelude to the parade.
Flint Hill School Presents Two Nights of An Evening of Laughter
Flint Hill School announces “An Evening of Laughter,” a production of four one-act plays to be held on Nov. 1 and 2. Six upper school students will perform roles in each of four one-act plays. "I love the one-act and short play format for many reasons,” says director and upper school drama teacher Carlo Grossman. “Besides the variety of different pieces the audience gets to enjoy, the actors have an opportunity to stretch their acting skills with roles different plays. In this case, the theme is comedy and the fun is infectious."

James Madison High School senior, Olivia Staton, 16, will appear on a national broadcast of From the Top on NPR, the pre-eminent showcase for America’s best young classical musicians, hosted by acclaimed pianist Christopher O’Riley. The episode will air locally on 90.9 FM on Dec. 22 at 6 p.m.

Boy Scouts from Troop 55 in Great Falls experienced rappelling down cliffs, spelunking in caves, skiing down mountains, canoeing in rivers, backpacking on the Appalachian Trail, traversing white water rapids and improving their marksmanship. These are just a few of the activities that the boys enjoyed as they developed their skills in leadership, responsibility and community service.

Brief: On Friday, Nov. 16, Greenspring residents and staff participated in the retirement community’s 10th Annual Turkey Trot, raising money to provide Thanksgiving turkeys to area families in need.
Thieves Target Cars in Parks
Detectives are investigating an apparent series of credit card thefts from vehicles parked at area parks. Many of the crimes have taken place at Burke Lake Park, but there were others at Wakefield and South Run Recreation Center. Detectives from the West Springfield Police District Criminal Investigation Section are working collaboratively with the Financial Crimes Unit to apprehend suspects on over two dozen cases; with the most recent six taking place at Burke Lake Park since Thanksgiving.
Fair Oaks Hospital Receives National Recognition
One Virginia hospital was among The Leapfrog Group’s annual class of “Top Hospitals” announced in Baltimore, Md. on Dec. 4. Inova Fair Oaks Hospital’s management and staffs for the first time completed the Leapfrog Hospital Survey, being transparent on patient safety and achieving the "Top Hospital" award.
