In early December, the Friends of the Great Falls Freedom Memorial Committee elected new officers: President - Andy Wilson; Vice President - Sandy Pidgeon; and Treasurer - Mike Kearney. The Friends of the Great Falls Freedom Memorial was formed in 2002 with the mission to build a memorial site in Great Falls dedicated to the residents who have given their lives for our freedom. That Memorial was dedicated on Nov. 13, 2004 and is located beside the Great Falls Library. The Friends supports the mission with yearly ceremonial events on Memorial Day, 9-11 Remembrance, and Veterans Day plus educational programs.

More than 28 percent of Fairfax County's population is foreign born; that's 317,000 residents. Consider Yesuf Beshir from Ethiopia, who two years ago settled in Springfield and now works for a government contractor. In May, he became an American citizen. “The main thing here is democracy, the right to vote,” Beshir said. These residents include nearly 20,000 who are self-employed business owners, truly job creators, large and small. One of these is Shami Walia who emigrated from India in 1982, and now owns Burke Cigar Shop, a popular cigar lounge that's become a neighborhood fixture. One part of our series will look at the business impacts of the foreign-born population.

Fifteen-year-old Runs Marathon for Orphans
David Glass of Fairfax Station is determined to help change the life of an orphaned baby in China.
David Glass is a 15-year-old with a big mission, to help change the life of an orphaned baby in China. Glass, an 8th grader at Robinson Secondary School in Fairfax Station, understands how important it is for someone to believe in a child without parents as he was adopted at age 12 from an orphanage in Beijing. This year he will be running in the Marine Corps Marathon in Washington, DC, with all of the funds he raises going to help “baby David,” a 6-month-old baby boy who was abandoned with cleft lip and palate.

Over 416,000 of these Virginians were living in deep poverty with a family of four having an annual household income under $11,525.
