For two grueling days, 13-year-old Jamie Goodson joined 120 other young hopefuls in a rare open audition casting call last December for the Arena Stage production of "The Music Man."

Cicadas stage a comeback to Potomac area.

Maturing slowly underground for the past 17 years, the cicada is poised to reappear in Potomac beginning sometime this month. Part of a class of periodic cicadas called Magicicada Brood II, found only on the eastern seaboard, this particular species is unique in its long, prime-numbered life cycle and massive, timed emergence, not to mention its loud chorus, that can sometimes top 90 decibels in a swarm.

Funny, heartwarming play receives 11 Cappie nominations.

Chantilly High’s Cappies play was called, “You Can’t Take It with You.” But if all goes well for the school at next month’s Cappies ceremony, Chantilly could take home some trophies for its side-splitting play. It received 11 nominations, and all the high-school theater winners will be unveiled, June 9, during the 14th annual Cappies Gala at The Kennedy Center in Washington, D.C.

MALICIOUS WOUNDING, 800 block of S. Ivy Street. At 7:55 p.m. on Jan. 3, a married couple got into a verbal dispute. The argument escalated and the wife stabbed her husband in his arm with a folding knife. The victim was transported to Virginia Hospital Center for medical treatment of the stab wound. A 20-year-old Arlington woman was arrested and charged with malicious wounding.

It takes a great deal to become a police station’s Officer of the Year, but PFC Joe Shields has what it takes. And last Wednesday, Feb. 13, he received that honor for 2012 during a meeting of the Sully District Station’s Citizens Advisory Committee.

Mystery, intrigue and laughs are all on the menu when the Clifton Dinner Theater presents its new show, “Murder Me Always.” And two Fairfax residents have starring roles. Performances are slated for March 14-16, at the Clifton Town Meeting Hall, 12641 Chapel Road in the Town of Clifton. Shirley’s Catering of Clifton is providing the dinner, all three nights, and wine and beer will be available.

Judi Dench Arrives In Poolesville

It wasn’t exactly a typical two days at the big curve on Sugarland Road and Sugarland Lane where the picturesque, brilliantly white, St. Paul Community Church with its quaint bell tower has been a country landmark for many years.
