Burke to Celebrate History Day
Modern-day Burke has quite the colorful past; from surviving the Civil War to becoming the weekend getaway for the residents of the nation’s capital. Complete with hotels and horse racing, Burke provided a popular destination for those living in the Washington D.C. area at the turn of the 20th century. And, in the not too distant past, citizens of Burke fought back—and won—after Burke was selected as the site for the second Washington Area jet airport, forcing the United States government instead to relocate to the current site now known as Dulles International Airport. To celebrate the oft-changing Burke, the community’s own historical society holds Burke History Day Saturday, Oct. 12, in Downtown Burke, featuring exhibits, children’s activities and presentations about the people, places and events throughout the years that the place as we know it today.
Dr. Gregory Sibley to Lead Virginia Cancer Specialists Radiation Oncology Center
Gregory S. Sibley, M.D., experienced Washington, D.C. area radiation oncologist, has been selected to head the Virginia Cancer Specialists (VCS) Radiation Oncology Center in Fairfax. VCS is Northern Virginia’s premier cancer care center, providing 40 years of service to patients battling cancer and blood diseases and affiliated with The US Oncology Network.
Herndon Hosts Fall Carnival
The first ever Herndon Fall Carnival was hosted at the Station Street parking lot in downtown Herndon Thursday, Sept. 26 to Saturday, Sept. 29. This location is adjacent to the ArtSpace Herndon at 750 Center Street and the Town Green. The Herndon Rotary Club partnered with the Town of Herndon and carnival company Jolly Shows to host this event.

Community Forum to Review Master Plan
With the Reston Master Plan Special Study Task Force work nearing completion, Supervisor Cathy Hudgins (D-Hunter Mill) is hosting a community meeting on Tuesday, Oct. 22, 7 p.m., to review the draft language for the Fairfax County Comprehensive Plan. The plan will guide development around the three transit station areas in Reston through 2030. The meeting will be held at South Lakes High School, Lecture Hall, 11400 South Lakes Drive, Reston.
RCC Announces 2013 Preference Poll Results
On Tuesday, Oct. 8, at the request of Supervisor Catherine M. Hudgins, the Fairfax County Board of Supervisors appointed three Reston residents to the nine-member Reston Community Center Board of Governors: returning Board member Beverly Cosham, and new board members John Mendonça and Michelle Moyer.

Vienna’s Karin’s Florist has been named the Best Florist in America by the hit daytime show “Steve Harvey” as part of its first annual Neighborhood Awards. Airing on Friday, Nov. 29, the “Steve Harvey” Neighborhood Awards recognize the unsung individuals and businesses who exemplify excellence in their communities. Categories this year include: Best Daycare Provider, Best Principal, Best Bus Driver, Best Police Officer, Best Deli, Best Bakery, Best Pizzeria, Best Florist, Best Steakhouse and Best Coffee Shop. Viewer votes determined both the nominees and the final winners. “Steve Harvey” is a nationally syndicated daytime show - check local listings for time and channel.
Members of 100+ Women Who Care Donate $3,800 to Our Daily Bread
Our Daily Bread has received $3,800 from the members of 100+ Women Who Care Northern Virginia to help ease the plight of low-income residents in the Fairfax County. The nonprofit was selected by the members of 100+ Women Who Care during the organization’s Nov. 7 meeting.

Named to commemorate the memory of a late local astronaut, the David M. Brown Planetarium will celebrate its grand re-opening with a ribbon-cutting ceremony and a weekend full of activities starting this Friday, Sept. 28.
MCC Budget to Be Discussed
The Governing Board of the McLean Community Center (MCC) will hold a finance committee meeting of the whole and a public hearing on the center’s proposed fiscal year 2014 budget in September. The center is located at 1234 Ingleside Avenue.
Candidates Sought for MCC Board
The McLean Community Center (MCC), an agency of Fairfax County Government, is seeking candidates to run for open seats on its 2013-2014 Governing Board. The board provides oversight and guidance for MCC programs and facilities, which include the Robert Ames Alden Theatre and the Old Firehouse Teen Center.

Alexandria Police Chief Earl Cook was joined by Mayor Bill Euille Jan. 24 as the Alexandria Police Foundation was presented a check for $15,000 on behalf of the Motorola Solutions Foundation's Public Safety and Security Institute to benefit the police foundation's memorial fund.
West Springfield Wins State Championship for Drama
West Springfield High School won the state championship for drama last month at the Virginia High School League One-Act Competition Finals in Charlottesville. This is the first state drama title for West Springfield in 15 years. The theatre department presented “The Other Room,” by Ariadne Blayde, which tells the story of Austin, a high-functioning autistic teenager who tries to connect with a female classmate while battling the voices in his head.

McLean Community Center honors David Sanders, establishes Craig McKenzie Legacy Award
The McLean Community Center’s (MCC) ninth annual Volunteer Appreciation Reception was held on Sunday, March 24, in the Community Hall. The theme was “Aloha” and center volunteers were treated to a catered lunch by Makakoa Catering and live music by The Aloha Boys. The center is located at 1234 Ingleside Ave.
Reston Character Counts! Coalition Receives Donation From Reston Town Center Ice Skating Pavilion
Reston Town Center’s ice skating pavilion presented a check for $2,966 to Reston Character Counts! Coalition. As an annual tradition, the coalition has received 50 percent of the opening weekend proceeds from the Reston Town Center ice skating pavilion for many years. This contribution helps fund the coalition’s development programs, including the annual Essay and Poster Contest, and sponsorship of Ethics Day at South Lakes High School.

Reston Residents Meet to Prepare for the Next Storm
On Saturday, Nov. 3, just days after Hurricane Sandy hit our region, Reston residents engaged in a dialogue at a forum titled “Is Your Neighborhood Ready for the Next Big Storm,” held at Reston Community Center Lake Anne. The event was organized by Reston for a Lifetime with the support of Reston Community Center and Reston Citizens Association to help create awareness and a dialogue before the first big snowstorm hits our region.
